Let Carrie Underwood make one thing clear: You can buy her a beer, but you ain\u2019t taking her home.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s essentially the opening lyric and the entire message of her latest single, \u201cDrinking Alone.\u201d In a recent issue of Billboard Country Update<\/em>, Underwood explained what the song was and was not about. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was important to me because we\u2019re singing this (in the) first person. I didn\u2019t want it to be like, \u2018Oh, we\u2019re going to get drunk and go home together,\u2019 because that\u2019s not something that I would do,\u201d Underwood says. \u201cIf it is going to be like an extreme kind of character, I think I\u2019d rather put it in third person, or put it in a (context where) you\u2019re speaking about somebody completely different, not use first person.\u201d<\/p>\n

And what she loves about this particularly haunting ballad is how she is upfront about the rules she has for drowning her sorrows. \u201cYou know, \u2018This isn\u2019t a thing, I\u2019m not going home with you. Let\u2019s just be here and be present and kind of get over our heartaches in the same space,’\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

After writing the song with Brett James and David Garcia, Underwood recorded \u201cDrinking Alone\u201d at Zac Brown\u2019s Southern Ground Recording Studio inside what used to be a Presbyterian sanctuary at the corner of 17th and McGavock in Nashville.<\/p>\n
