For many in the Glenwood Springs region, the Christmas season begins with the familiar melodies and intricate harmonies of traditional Christmas music being sung by a choir.<\/p>\n

It is perhaps for this reason that the Mountain Madrigal Singers, now in its 39th season of providing Christmas-themed concerts, has become such a popular part of the Christmas season in Glenwood.<\/p>\n

The all-volunteer choir will perform its first of four concerts tonight at the Glenwood Church of Christ starting at 7:30 p.m., then will give a matinee performance at 2:30 p.m. Sunday before finishing its season with 7:30 p.m. performances Dec. 14 and 15.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme, \u201cSounds of Bethlehem Joy,\u201d hints at program pieces like \u201cThe News in Bethlehem Town,\u201d a men\u2019s piece called \u201cBethlehem Spiritual,\u201d and of course, \u201cBethlehem Joy.\u201d But the choir will also perform more familiar songs like the madrigal \u201cWe Three Kings,\u201d as well as a medley called \u201cJolly Jingle Christmas\u201d that includes everything from \u201cDeck the Halls\u201d to \u201cO Christmas Tree,\u201d \u201cJingle Bells\u201d and \u201cJolly Old St. Nicholas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll run the gamut from traditional a cappella pieces to group pieces with musicians \u2014 we have drums, guitar, bass and two pianists, one of whom also plays violin, cello and harp,\u201d said Cliff Keen, who is in his 20th season with the Mountain Madrigal Singers.<\/p>\n

Keen said that the choir begins rehearsing once a week starting in August, which gives its singers ample time to meet the choir\u2019s goal of memorizing every song they will perform.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really makes the performance much better,\u201d Keen said. \u201cIf (director Laura Porterfield) changes direction we can change with her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes the songs much better, and we have a lot more fun because we are able to throw in some choreography.\u201d<\/p>\n

The concerts generally fill up, Keen said, so it\u2019s a good idea to arrive early.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have people that come in from other parts of the country that came to our concert (the first time) by accident to spend time with their family,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd now they\u2019ve changed their schedules to come and visit their family when we\u2019re doing our concerts, just so they can hear us sing.\u201d<\/p>\n
