{"id":1317203,"date":"2019-12-10T17:37:59","date_gmt":"2019-12-11T00:37:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/?p=991646"},"modified":"2019-12-10T17:37:59","modified_gmt":"2019-12-11T00:37:59","slug":"adopt-a-family-program-brings-holiday-spirit-to-families-in-need-up-and-down-valley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/adopt-a-family-program-brings-holiday-spirit-to-families-in-need-up-and-down-valley\/","title":{"rendered":"Adopt-a-family program brings holiday spirit to families in need up and down-Valley"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"761\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/06\/GP_GP201110110309937AR.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/06\/GP_GP201110110309937AR.jpg 761w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/06\/GP_GP201110110309937AR-150x118.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/06\/GP_GP201110110309937AR-325x256.jpg 325w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/06\/GP_GP201110110309937AR-620x489.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 761px) 100vw, 761px\"><figcaption><strong>Kelley Cox Post Independent<\/strong><br \/><em><\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span>For over two decades, the Salvation Army\u2019s Adopt-a-Family Program has paired local sponsors with families in need to ensure they have a meaningful holiday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Beginning in October, the Salvation Army in Glenwood Springs starts asking households in need to complete a wish list, which depending on the family\u2019s circumstance may include clothing, food, toys and other goods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Adopt-a-Family Volunteer Coordinator Jill Wentling then turns over those wish lists to local sponsors who \u201cadopt\u201d a family or families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere\u2019s not really a set dollar amount,\u201d Wentling said. \u201cIt\u2019s whatever is in your heart, that you would like to provide for that family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sponsors, which include local businesses and residents, then hand-deliver those wrapped toys and other goods to their adopted families by Christmas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to Glenwood Springs Salvation Army Coordinator Karen Lee, the Adopt-a-Family Program has practically doubled in size over the years but remains small in order to focus on local families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2010, the program helped between 10 and 12 families whereas in 2019 it will serve 20 to 25 households in need from Snowmass Village to Parachute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis isn\u2019t about getting what\u2019s on the wish list,\u201d Lee said. \u201cIt\u2019s about someone trying to help. It\u2019s the spirit of Christmas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Wentling, who has helped coordinate the Adopt-a-Family Program for nearly 10 years called the experience incredibly rewarding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Wentling also recalled the first time she hand-delivered gifts to a struggling father and his two children in New Castle, whose Christmas could have been bleak otherwise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHis little kids were smiling and they just couldn\u2019t believe these packages were for them that I was bringing in,\u201d Wentling said. \u201cThe father was so grateful.
