{"id":1317326,"date":"2019-12-18T17:19:57","date_gmt":"2019-12-19T00:19:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/?p=991896"},"modified":"2019-12-18T17:19:57","modified_gmt":"2019-12-19T00:19:57","slug":"anb-bank-gets-approval-to-build-new-bank-in-downtown-glenwood-springs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/anb-bank-gets-approval-to-build-new-bank-in-downtown-glenwood-springs\/","title":{"rendered":"ANB Bank gets approval to build new bank in downtown Glenwood Springs"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/12\/IMG_1278-1024x540.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/12\/IMG_1278-1024x540.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/12\/IMG_1278-300x158.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/12\/IMG_1278-768x405.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/12\/IMG_1278-1536x809.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/12\/IMG_1278-2048x1079.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><figcaption><strong>The sun sets over the two, circa 1915 buildings where ANB Bank will build their new, two-story bank and office building. <\/strong><br \/><em>Matthew Bennett \/ Post Independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The Glenwood Springs Planning and Zoning Commission, in a unanimous vote Tuesday night, approved ANB Bank\u2019s proposal to move into the 900 block of Grand Avenue downtown.<\/p>\n<p>ANB Bank purchased the properties at 910 and 918 Grand Avenue with the intent of demolishing two circa-1915 buildings in order to construct a 9,706 square foot, two-story bank and office building.<\/p>\n<p>ANB Bank already submitted a design proposal in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/glenwood-springs-pz-turns-down-anb-banks-downtown-plan\/\">July<\/a>, which the planning and zoning commission unanimously denied.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, commissioners did not believe ANB Bank\u2019s proposal promoted a cohesive visual identity or created a high-quality pedestrian environment.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, commissioners took issue with the building\u2019s primary entrance not facing Grand Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>The Glenwood Springs City Council then upheld the planning and zoning commission\u2019s findings in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/glenwood-city-council-upholds-planning-and-zoning-commissions-denial-of-anb-bank\/\">September<\/a>, after ANB Bank appealed that decision.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday night, ANB Bank submitted a new building design, which commissioners believed satisfied the city\u2019s development code with an entranceway facing Grand Avenue and building materials resembling Red Mountain\u2019s color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI struggle with the use but that\u2019s not my job to make a decision on,\u201d Marco Dehm, Planning and Zoning commission chairman, said. \u201cThis is a use by right and we are here to look at the design.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The seven tenants moving out or already moved out of the buildings that ANB Bank will later demolish include KC\u2019s Winghouse, Tesseract Comics &amp; Games, Jewels &amp; Gems, Bellini\u2019s Fashion, CPA Services Pro, Inc., Glenwood Spa N Nails and the Glenwood Escape Room.<\/p>\n<p>A few of those tenants have already relocated and the remaining ones have until May 31, 2020 to vacate the premise.<\/p>\n<p>In its new facility, ANB Bank plans to occupy the bottom floor and rent out the second story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe offered all tenants one full year of free rent, free utilities, full security deposit refunds and the opportunity to remove any and all improvements that they may have contributed to the property,\u201d Randy Diers, ANB Bank community bank president for Glenwood Springs, said. \u201cWe have given material consideration to the affected tenants that probably no one else would have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of those tenants was Jewels &amp; Gems Owner Cheryl Guay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m one of the business owners that has to get out,\u201d Guay said. \u201cI\u2019m thinking about moving to Carbondale because there isn\u2019t anything left in Glenwood I don\u2019t believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guay has done business in downtown Glenwood Springs for 35 years, with the last 25 being in the building ANB Bank will demolish.<\/p>\n<p>Laura Speck, who owns The Silver Bead across Grand Avenue from Jewels and Gems also spoke out against ANB Bank\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is jeopardizing so many people\u2019s reputations and livelihoods in this downtown,\u201d Speck said. \u201cThis is devastating our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, commissioners Dehm, Tim Malloy, Sumner Schachter, Amber Wissing and alternate Dean Kinkel supported the motion to approve ANB Bank\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, a few audience members spoke in favor of ANB Bank\u2019s relocation to the downtown core including former Glenwood Springs Chamber CEO Marianne Virgili.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in this wonderful country where when you buy a piece of property that\u2019s zoned for a specific use, you can develop it for that use,\u201d Virgili said. \u201cI do stand by use by right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The planning and zoning commission is the final decision-making body concerning ANB Bank\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"mailto:mabennett@postindependent.com\">mabennett@postindependent.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/anb-bank-gets-approval-to-build-new-bank-in-downtown-glenwood-springs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Post Independent<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The sun sets over the two, circa 1915 buildings where ANB Bank will build their new, two-story bank and office building.
