My father and I still regret the first and only time I dabbled in the world of high fashion.<\/p>\n

According to Yahoo! Lifestyle, retro fashions from the \u201960s, \u201970s and \u201980s are making a comeback this year.<\/p>\n

Allthingshair.com reports that 16 throwback hairstyles from the \u201970s are \u201cback and better than ever!\u201d<\/p>\n

While these playful trends are good for our country \u2014 more on that later \u2014 I have my misgivings.<\/p>\n

Because I\u2019m still upset about the David Cassidy shag haircut my sisters made me get in 1973, when I was 11.<\/p>\n

Cassidy, the heartthrob star of TV\u2019s \u201cThe Partridge Family,\u201d was all the rage then. Like millions of teenage girls, my sisters had major crushes on him.<\/p>\n

They told me I\u2019d be the first kid in St. Germaine School to part my hair down the middle and feather it over my ears. They told me I\u2019d be popular with the girls.<\/p>\n

So I did the unthinkable. I pedaled my bike three miles to the unisex hair salon behind Murphy Mart. I set my crumpled bills and coins on the counter.<\/p>\n

\u201cMake me look like David Cassidy,\u201d I said to the lady, a smoldering Marlboro Light dangling from her lips.<\/p>\n

She clipped, cut, styled and set. She applied goops and sprays. When she turned the chair around so I could see myself in the mirror, I was horrified.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t look like David Cassidy. I looked like Danny Bonaduce, Cassidy\u2019s TV little brother.<\/p>\n

The rest of that day, I hid in my room \u2014 until my father demanded I join the family for supper.<\/p>\n

I took my seat to his right. He sensed something was off immediately.<\/p>\n

Washing his burger down with gulps of Pabst Blue Ribbon, he kept looking at me.<\/p>\n

\u2018What the heck happened to your hair?\u201d he finally said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got it cut.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s parted down the middle.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would anyone part his hair down the middle?!\u201d<\/p>\n

I had no answer for him then. But today, psychologists offer interesting insight into fashion\u2019s deeper meaning.<\/p>\n

Clothing and style reflect what\u2019s going on in our culture. In a strong economy, dress is more playful, colorful and bold. That\u2019s what current trends suggest \u2014 and it\u2019s a positive.<\/p>\n

\u201cClothing affects our mental processes and perceptions, which can change our minds and the way we think,\u201d according to research by Karen Pine, a University of Hertfordshire professor.<\/p>\n

In her book \u201cMind What You Wear: The Psychology of Fashion,\u201d Pine \u201cshows how people\u2019s mental processes and perceptions can be primed by clothing, as they internalize the symbolic meaning of their outer layers.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words, playful retro fashion trends just might be beneficial to our national psyche. Can they help us loosen up rigid mental processes and perceptions, and maybe even change how we relate to people with whom we vehemently disagree?<\/p>\n

Hey, it\u2019s a small step, but it\u2019s worth a shot.<\/p>\n

Which brings us back to my David Cassidy haircut. It wasn\u2019t until my mid-20s that I got rid of that long-out-of-fashion style.<\/p>\n

I asked for something modern and trendy. The hairdresser cut my hair short and slicked it straight back with greasy goop.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the heck happened to your hair?\u201d said my father.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got it cut.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look like Eddie Munster!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
