{"id":1317594,"date":"2020-01-08T14:35:28","date_gmt":"2020-01-08T21:35:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/?p=992437"},"modified":"2020-01-08T14:35:28","modified_gmt":"2020-01-08T21:35:28","slug":"driver-in-dangerous-rifle-chase-takes-plea-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/driver-in-dangerous-rifle-chase-takes-plea-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Driver in dangerous Rifle chase takes plea deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"817\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/GettyImages-854300870.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/GettyImages-854300870.jpg 817w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/GettyImages-854300870-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/GettyImages-854300870-768x401.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 817px) 100vw, 817px\"><figcaption><strong>Judge&#8217;s gavel<\/strong><br \/><em>Getty<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The man who drove 80 mph through a school zone in April nearly missing a child took a plea deal Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Khalil Anderson, 21, pleaded guilty to vehicular eluding, a class 5 felony, and got a two-year deferred sentence\u2014meaning he will not have to go to prison unless he violates his probation.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson also pleaded guilty to driving with a suspended license and overtaking a school bus and was sentenced to 74 hours of community service and a total of six days with the Workenders alternative sentencing program in Rifle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/suspect-in-bizarre-rifle-car-chase-in-custody\/\">According to arrest records<\/a>, Anderson made a number of dangerous maneuvers before and after police began to chase him.<\/p>\n<p>Bystanders photographed Anderson\u2019s car nearly hitting a young girl, and passing a school bus, speeding, on a double-yellow line.<\/p>\n<p>Rifle Police officers began pursuing, and observed the car speeding and running at least one red light.<\/p>\n<p>Because it was late afternoon and children were in the area, the police called off the chase out of safety and caught up with Anderson when he parked at a motel.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Terry Ruckriegle, a fill-in judge for Tuesday\u2019s sentencing hearing, said the incident indicated Anderson showed an inability to control oneself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I see the picture of you passing this school bus on a double line, I wonder, what the hell is going on in that person\u2019s head to do that?\u201d Ruckreigle said.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson told the judge that he has matured greatly in recent months, has a job and community in Montrose and no longer drives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made my decision, and I\u2019m paying for it now. I ask for a little bit of leniency to help me grow and prosper in life,\u201d Anderson said.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutor Zac Parsons said hopefully the threat of prison will encourage Anderson to avoid criminal behavior.
