{"id":1317874,"date":"2020-01-23T17:53:10","date_gmt":"2020-01-24T00:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/?p=992902"},"modified":"2020-01-23T17:53:10","modified_gmt":"2020-01-24T00:53:10","slug":"driver-charged-in-rifle-pedestrian-homicide-told-police-he-drank-2-beers-before-7-a-m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/driver-charged-in-rifle-pedestrian-homicide-told-police-he-drank-2-beers-before-7-a-m\/","title":{"rendered":"Driver charged in Rifle pedestrian homicide told police he drank 2 beers before 7 a.m."},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/10\/PI-crime-v2-small.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt=\"Post Independent crime news graphic\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/10\/PI-crime-v2-small.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/10\/PI-crime-v2-small-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The 19-year-old suspected driver in a crash that killed a pedestrian in Rifle just before sunrise Wednesday told police he drank 2 beers before driving.<\/p>\n<p>Rifle Police say Chayton Reynolds faces charges of vehicular homicide for allegedly driving drunk and hitting Robert Baumwoll, 50, around 7:20 a.m. Jan. 22 on U.S. Highway 6 east of Rifle.<\/p>\n<p>Baumwoll was unresponsive and didn\u2019t have a pulse when police arrived at the scene east of the Rifle Remote Control Park, according to a probable cause statement from a Rifle Police officer.<\/p>\n<p>The first officers attempted CPR and chest compressions to revive Baumwoll, but he was later pronounced dead.<\/p>\n<p>Officers noted that the car, a blue Honda Civic, had a dent in the hood and \u201ca large hole in the windshield about the size of a human head,\u201d according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds was crying when officers interviewed him, but said he was driving to a friend\u2019s house, heard a thump and turned around to see what he had hit. He said he did not see anything before the collision, and would not answer when the officer asked him if the person he hit had been in the road.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds told the officer that he had drunk \u201cabout two beers in the last two hours,\u201d according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n<p>Baumwoll died of blunt force injuries, according to Garfield County Coroner Robert Glassmire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly tragic for everyone involved,\u201d public defender Elise Myer said in Reynold\u2019s first court appearance in the case Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds was on probation for a juvenile misdemeanor that he pleaded guilty to in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly this case is very upsetting. Certainly it\u2019s upsetting to Mr. Reynolds,\u201d Myer said. \u201cThe arrest report indicates that he was incredibly distraught and emotional at the scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a first court appearance in the case Thursday afternoon, assistant District Attorney Tony Hershey said the case underlined the dangers of driving under the influence.<\/p>\n<p>Hershey pointed out Reynolds\u2019 admission to drinking two beers before 7 a.m. and other indications of drinking, including slurred speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrinking and driving can kill people,\u201d Hershey said.<\/p>\n<p>Hershey requested a bond of $25,000, but Judge Tom Ossola, who was filling in at the 9<sup>th<\/sup> District Court Thursday, set bond at $10,000.<\/p>\n<p>Myer noted that her client was presumed innocent until proven guilty, and said there may be other factors that will come out in the case, such as road conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Baumwoll had a Silt address, but the coroner believes he may have been staying with friends in Rifle.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone with knowledge of Baumwoll\u2019s whereabouts between Jan. 21 and Jam. 22 are asked to contact the Garfield County Coroner\u2019s Office at 970-665-6335.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"mailto:tphippen@postindependent.com\">tphippen@postindependent.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/driver-charged-in-rifle-pedestrian-homicide-told-police-he-drank-2-beers-before-7-a-m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Post Independent<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 19-year-old suspected driver in a crash that killed a pedestrian in Rifle just before sunrise Wednesday told police he drank 2 beers before driving.
