Steve\u2019s Guitars continues its tradition of bringing world-class musicians to Carbondale when it hosts Canadian bluegrass band The Slocan Ramblers on Monday night.<\/p>\n

The Juno Award nominees (Canada\u2019s Grammys) are \u201crooted in tradition, fearlessly creative and possessing a bold, dynamic sound,\u201d according to their website.<\/p>\n

The Slocans have a reputation for energetic live shows that feature impeccable musicianship. As such, they\u2019ve gained a reputation for turning casual listeners into lifelong fans, and winning over audiences at big-time festivals such as Merlefest and RockyGrass.<\/p>\n

On Monday night at Steve\u2019s, you can expect to hear The Slocans cover everything from rowdy, old-time bluegrass songs like \u201cGroundhog,\u201d to classics like Woody Guthrie\u2019s \u201cPastures of Plenty.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Toronto-based band consists of lead singer Frank Evans, who plays both clawhammer and Scruggs-style banjo; Adrian Gross. who brings speed and aggression to the mandolin; Darryl Poulsen, whose guitar playing is said to be like a steady, rolling train; and Alastair Whitehead, who brings a big thump to the bass, and adds soft vocal harmonies to the mix.<\/p>\n

The Slocans actually take their name from British Columbia\u2019s Slocan Valley, and their sound is said to reflect that area with its picturesque mountainous and natural landscape.<\/p>\n

Their album \u201cQueen City Jubilee\u201d was a 2019 Juno Award nominee for Traditional Roots Album of the Year, and showcases The Slocans\u2019 unique style, which combines bluegrass, old-time folk, rapidly played instrumentals and gritty vocals by lead singer Evans.<\/p>\n

The album was produced by Chris Coole, one of Canada\u2019s pre-eminent folk musicians, and marks a profound step in the band\u2019s growth as songwriters and interpreters. It features traditional folk-influenced originals like \u201cMakin\u2019 Home,\u201d \u201cMighty Hard Road\u201d and \u201cFirst Train in the Morning,\u201d as well as rippin\u2019 bluegrass tunes like \u201cMississippi Heavy Water Blues,\u201d \u201cSun\u2019s Gonna Shine in my Back Door Someday\u201d and \u201cRiley the Furniture Man.\u201d There also are three dedicated instrumentals on the album, \u201cDown in the Sugarbush,\u201d \u201cNew Morning\u201d and \u201cShut the Door.\u201d<\/p>\n
