Exactly one year ago, the first SongFarm recording studio opened in Ross Copperman\u2019s alma mater, Glenvar High School in Roanoke, Virginia. And next up is the one in Sterling High School in Sterling, Kansas, which is Nicolle Galyon\u2019s alma mater. <\/p>\n

And that\u2019s part of the reason why Nashville songwriters Copperman and Galyon were being celebrated as SongFarm\u2019s Champions of the Year on Thursday night (Feb. 13) at Nashville\u2019s Clementine \u2014 an old West Nashville United Methodist Church that\u2019s been converted into a stunning event space. But the night was also a celebration of the work being done with SongFarm and the Save The Music Foundation. <\/p>\n

\u201cI have to admit I\u2019m kind of crawling out of my skin right now,\u201d Galyon admitted when she took the stage. \u201cBecause the award for me is the gift I get to give to my hometown. Ross and I actually just got home from a creative retreat \u2014 so we\u2019re very much in our feels \u2014 but we heard a quote this week that I think speaks to a lot of us: artists are people driven by the tension between the desire to communicate and the desire to hide. Is that not every teenager you know? That truly wraps up the heart of what we\u2019re doing here. In high school, I was one of the lucky ones. I had champions behind me that pushed me. But even with all of that, I still had a yearning to do something that maybe didn\u2019t fit. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I was wanting was someone to hand me a blank page,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Copperman echoed those same sentiments, adding that the night was not about him but about the importance of the initiatives of SongFarm and Save the Music. \u201cThis whole thing is not about me at all. It\u2019s about Save the Music. I\u2019ve been a huge fan of Save the Music my whole life. I remember as a kid being enamored with it,\u201d he said. Steve Franco, Copperman\u2019s high school drama director, was at the event to corroborate that, and to share his thoughts on how impactful it\u2019s been to have a SongFarm Studio at Glenvar.<\/p>\n

But it wasn\u2019t all<\/em> talk. There was just enough music to remind everyone why they were there. <\/p>\n

Copperman performed a couple of the recent songs he\u2019d written, Kenny Chesney\u2019s \u201cSetting the World on Fire\u201d and Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani\u2019s \u201cNobody But You.\u201d Galyon performed \u201cTequila,\u201d the song she co-wrote for Dan + Shay. And country star Michael Ray was there, too, to share his new song, \u201cHer World or Mine.\u201d <\/p>\n
