Glenwood Springs\u2019 senior septet did it. The seven members of the Demons boys basketball class of 2020 has secured their fourth straight 4A Western Slope League championship \u00ad \u2014 the first Demons class in recent memory to pull off that feat.<\/p>\n

It came by virtue of a tough-it-out 42-40 win on the road at Steamboat Springs Saturday afternoon \u2014 a day that also saw the Glenwood girls lock down their first WSL title in six years with a 46-32 win of their own over Steamboat.<\/p>\n

Both teams improve to 18-3 on the season and perfect 10-0 in the league with two games remaining.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought the kids came out well in the first half, especially on the defensive end,\u201d boys coach Fred Heisel said. \u201cWe knew we had the opportunity to secure the league championship a little bit early, which can be a concern in a game like that. But I was really happy with the way they played.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt came down to a lot of kids willing for fight for 32 minutes, and it took all 32.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Demons were up 25-20 at the half and played the Sailors to an even 11 each in the third, before the home team started chipping away at the lead in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe missed some free throws down the stretch that we normally make, but we built a good lead early and were able to hang on,\u201d Heisel said.<\/p>\n

Senior John Iuele had 15 points to league the Demons and fellow senior Mitchell Burt added 8 points to the winning effort.<\/p>\n

Dawson Lindquist led the Sailors (11-10, 7-3) with 16 points.<\/p>\n

Stats for the girls game were not immediately available.<\/p>\n

Demons hockey wins 10-0 over Coronado<\/p>\n

The Glenwood High School hockey Demons are keeping two things in mind as the season winds down to the final week of the regular season \u2014 winning the final two Peak League games of the season to secure a conference title, and keeping their heads in playoff mode.<\/p>\n

The Demons took care of business Friday night with a convincing 10-0 win over visiting Coronado. Next up, the biggest game of the season Tuesday night versus Summit, 7:45 p.m. at the Glenwood Springs Community Center ice rink.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this point in the year you start to see some teams pull away and some teams that are in rebuild mode,\u201d Demons coach Tim Cota said after the win. \u201cThankfully, and with a lot of hard work from our players, we are in playoff mode.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur concern going into this game was playing a game on paper and talking about rankings. We wanted to make sure our boys stuck to a game plan no matter the rankings,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Glenwood opened with two goals in the first period from Dylan Webster and Kelton McPherson, followed by another three goals in the second from Ryan Kotz, Colton Strautman and again from McPherson.<\/p>\n

The third period saw a scoring showcase in front of the home crowd, as Strautman and Kotz each completed the hat trick and Sean Mooney also found the net for the shutout final.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were stressing defense all night long, knowing that down the stretch this will be a key to our success,\u201d defensive coach Bryan Gonzales said.<\/p>\n

Senior co-captain Jake Fowler added, \u201cWe certainly didn\u2019t want to take anyone lightly. We know we have to go out there and punch the clock every night.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cota added, \u201cWhat\u2019s important in these types of games is you stick to your routine on and off the ice and don\u2019t develop any bad habits \u2014 stick to a game plan and execute.\u201d<\/p>\n
