{"id":1319035,"date":"2020-03-23T18:11:13","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T00:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/?p=994916"},"modified":"2020-03-23T18:11:13","modified_gmt":"2020-03-24T00:11:13","slug":"the-loss-of-sense-of-smell-anosmia-might-be-symptom-of-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/the-loss-of-sense-of-smell-anosmia-might-be-symptom-of-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"The loss of sense of smell, anosmia, might be symptom of COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/03\/COVID-19.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/03\/COVID-19.png 642w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/03\/COVID-19-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\"><figcaption><strong>A Centers for Disease Control illustration of the COVID-19 coronavirus.<\/strong><br \/><em><\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Should the loss of sense of smell be added to the list of COVID-19 symptoms?<\/p>\n<p>A statement posted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entuk.org\/sites\/default\/files\/files\/Loss%20of%20sense%20of%20smell%20as%20marker%20of%20COVID.pdf\">entuk.org<\/a> suggests maybe so.<\/p>\n<p>ENT UK is the website which represents ear, nose and throat medical practitioners in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement signed off on by Prof. Claire Hopkins, president of the British Rhinological Society and Prof. Nirmal Kumar, president of ENT UK, \u201csignificant numbers of patients with proven COVID-19 infection have developed anosmia\/hyposmia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anosmia refers to the complete loss of smell whereas hyposmia refers to a reduction in sense of smell.<\/p>\n<p>The statement reads that in South Korea, 30% of positive patients exhibited anosmia as \u201ctheir major presenting symptom in otherwise mild cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomebody who has had a loss of smell over the past year, that is not what we are talking about,\u201d said Dr. Peter Zonakis an otolaryngologist at Grand River Health. \u201cWe are talking about somebody, who in the past month or so, has lost their sense of smell\u2026We have to figure when (COVID-19) has been more prevalent in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In January, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the first case of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>As of Monday afternoon, the CDC reported 33,404 known cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. and 400 deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the American Academy of Otolaryngology \u2013 Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) recently proposed adding anosmia to the list of COVID-19 screening tools.<\/p>\n<p>The academy stated that anosmia, \u201cin the absence of other respiratory disease,\u201d should indicate to physicians the possibility of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are looking for any patterns at all, that they can see in the course of treating this, and that is not unusual,\u201d Zonakis said. \u201cIt\u2019s just an additional thing for us to be aware of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The evidence to support the loss of sense of smell as a possible COVID-19 symptom was anecdotal AAO-HNS stated.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the CDC lists fever, cough and shortness of breath as the most common symptoms of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is extremely important, nobody with anosmia in the last month or two needs to see a doctor,\u201d Zonakis said. \u201cThey really don\u2019t because they\u2019re otherwise perfectly healthy.
