This idea initially came to Garth Brooks when a Facebook follower of his asked him to play Keith Whitley\u2019s song \u201cTen Feet Away.\u201d An especially relevant and touching song in this new normal of social distancing. <\/p>\n

Brooks then agreed to take start taking requests the following week. \u201cLet\u2019s just make a date. Next week (March 23) we\u2019re just gonna do guitar, vocal,\u201d Brooks told his Facebook followers. \u201cYou send in the set list.\u201d <\/p>\n

And they did. More than three million fans tuned in for the hour-long virtual concert on Monday night, and about 50,000 song requests were made. <\/p>\n

During the stripped-down show from their home, Brooks and his wife Trisha Yearwood took the \u201cstage\u201d lovingly and ready to play whatever they could in the time they had together. \u201cI need this worse than anybody,\u201d Brooks admitted at the start of the show, acknowledging his own cabin fever. \u201cI gotta tell you, man, I miss it. Damn. I miss it. It\u2019s like all you want to do is play, you know? It\u2019s a little tough right now,\u201d he said. \u201cI just miss playing.\u201d <\/p>\n

But then, he played. Brooks shared songs of his own and of his heroes: \u201cOne Night a Day,\u201d James Taylor\u2019s \u201cFire and Rain\u201d and \u201cSweet Baby James,\u201d and Yearwood\u2019s \u201cThe Woman Before Me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yearwood covered Linda Ronstadt\u2019s \u201cLong, Long Time\u201d and \u201cAmazing Grace.\u201d<\/p>\n

And together, Brooks and Yearwood did their own \u201cWhiskey to Wine,\u201d George Jones and Tammy Wynette\u2019s \u201cGolden Ring,\u201d Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper\u2019s \u201cShallow,\u201d Leonard Cohen\u2019s \u201cHallelujah,\u201d and Ed Sheeran\u2019s \u201cPerfect.\u201d Which was perfect. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis thing flew by. I have overstayed my welcome,\u201d Brooks said. <\/p>\n

As the couple closed the show, Brooks reiterated that we are all in this together. \u201cLove one another,\u201d he said, \u201cin this together. Amen. Love you guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

The one song Brooks didn\u2019t<\/em> do? Whitley\u2019s song \u201cTen Feet Away.\u201d Maybe next time.<\/p>\n
