The term \u201cY2K\u201d was as common then as \u201cCovid-19\u201d is now. And it, too, was a worldwide concern. What it referred to was the fear that computer programming software would fail when its internal clock had to roll over from 1999 to 2000. It never happened, of course, but millions of dollars and trillions of beads of sweat were spent in anticipation of it.<\/p>\n<p>The calendar change was smoother for women artists keeping or seeking a place in country music. Several who had first entered the charts in the 1990s continued to have hits in 2000 and later, among them Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill, Jo Dee Messina and Lee Ann Womack. But new stars began twinkling in the first decade of the 2000s \u2014 performers who would prove that they the right stuff for the long run and who still shine brightly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE HEADLINERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Miranda Lambert<\/strong> entered Music Row\u2019s consciousness in 2003 after placing third on <em>Nashville Star<\/em>. The Texas native was soon signed to Epic Records. Although her first two singles were critically successful, she did not make the Top 20 until \u201cKerosene,\u201d which incorporated a Steve Earle riff, went to No. 15 in 2007.<\/p>\n<div class=\"deferred_content\"> Embedded from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rB7ONnfIjaI?feature=oembed\">www.youtube.com<\/a>. <noscript class=\"deferred_content\" data-deferred-info=\"{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;iframe&quot;}\"> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rB7ONnfIjaI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen>\t<\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div>\n<p>Quite a few mid-charting hits helped her gain further traction, such as \u201cNew Strings,\u201d \u201cFamous in a Small Town,\u201d \u201cMore Like Her,\u201d and \u201cWhite Liar,\u201d all of which she wrote or co-wrote. It won a Grammy and was named song of the year by both the CMA and ACM. Her winning single from that show, \u201cInside Your Heaven\u201d debuted at No. 1 on the pop chart. Near the end of that year, she released her first album, <em>Some Hearts<\/em>. It also earned her the first three of her seven Grammys. In 2006, Underwood copped her first CMA awards \u2014 female vocalist of the year and the Horizon trophy. It was not until the following year that her career exploded with \u201cTeardrops on My Guitar\u201d and \u201cOur Song\u201d (a six-week No. 1 smash). For example, <em>Taylor Swift<\/em> (2006) has now achieved worldwide sales of over 7 million copies. <em>Fearless<\/em> (2008) currently stands at 12 million and counting, and <em>Speak Now<\/em> (2010) hovers just above 5 million.
