{"id":1319224,"date":"2020-04-01T18:04:02","date_gmt":"2020-04-02T00:04:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/?p=995180"},"modified":"2020-04-01T18:04:02","modified_gmt":"2020-04-02T00:04:02","slug":"glenwood-springs-city-council-to-look-at-possibly-restricting-vacation-rentals-during-stay-at-home-order","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/glenwood-springs-city-council-to-look-at-possibly-restricting-vacation-rentals-during-stay-at-home-order\/","title":{"rendered":"Glenwood Springs City Council to look at possibly restricting vacation rentals during stay-at-home order"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/VacaRentals-gpi-091719-1024x682.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/VacaRentals-gpi-091719-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/VacaRentals-gpi-091719-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/VacaRentals-gpi-091719-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/VacaRentals-gpi-091719.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><figcaption><strong>Group of friends arrive at a summer vacation rental.<\/strong><br \/><em>Getty Images<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Despite a statewide stay-at-home order, some vacation rentals in Glenwood Springs remain available.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday, at its regularly scheduled meeting, city council will look at possible restrictions for VRBOs (vacation rentals by owner) during the stay-at-home order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf people flee big cities and come here, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s a good idea until we know how bad this is going to get,\u201d said Councilor Tony Hershey. \u201cWe can\u2019t have people coming here and getting sick, or bringing COVID(-19) from other places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Public Information Officer Hannah Klausman, Glenwood Springs has 99 vacation rentals on the grid \u2013 88 short-term rentals and 11 accessory tourist rentals.<\/p>\n<p>Short-term rental owners can rent out an entire residence whereas those operating accessory tourist rentals can only offer a single room.<\/p>\n<p>The city has not limited any vacation rental owner\u2019s ability to rent out &nbsp;property to guests at this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of this has to boil down to common sense,\u201d Councilor Rick Voorhees said. \u201cI hope the short term rental people haven\u2019t been booking new reservations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some vacation rentals in Glenwood Springs still show availability on sites like vrbo.com. whereas others will not accept any reservations until the end of April.<\/p>\n<p>Many area hotels and motels have also elected to close their doors temporarily and voluntarily.<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s standing public health order identifies \u201cHotels, and places of accommodation\u201d as a critical business exempt from Gov. Jared Polis\u2019 stay-at-home order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery exemption that we make just seems to allow another loophole for somebody,\u201d Voorhees said. \u201cAt some point self-responsibility has to take over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At last week\u2019s special city council meeting, councilors did not vote on a resolution that would have adopted the city\u2019s own public health order.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the restrictions in Glenwood\u2019s public health order were already instituted in Gov. Jared Polis\u2019 executive order declared shortly before council\u2019s own special meeting.<\/p>\n<p>However, the city\u2019s own public health order would have placed stricter regulations on short-term lodging businesses including hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and short-term rentals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not have enough ICU beds, we do not have enough ventilators to accommodate an influx of people from other areas,\u201d Mayor Jonathan Godes said. \u201cAny venue that contributes to, potentially, the transportation or transmission of infected people from one community to the next \u2013 we got to shut it down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Had it been approved as written last Thursday, the city\u2019s public health order would have prevented short-term lodging businesses from taking new reservations from March 26 until an unspecified date in April.<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s order would have also forced short-term lodging units to vacate their premises with some exceptions; local workers, individuals experiencing symptoms of illness and anyone under a quarantine or isolation order from Garfield County would have been permitted to stay.<\/p>\n<p>Whether or not council decides to adopt any of those additional measures remains to be seen at Thursday\u2019s meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to have the discussion,\u201d Hershey said.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"mailto:mabennett@postindependent.com\">mabennett@postindependent.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/glenwood-springs-city-council-to-look-at-possibly-restricting-vacation-rentals-during-stay-at-home-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Post Independent<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Group of friends arrive at a summer vacation rental.Getty Images Despite a statewide stay-at-home order, some vacation rentals in Glenwood Springs remain available.
