Matthew Bennett \/ Post Independent<\/strong><br \/><em><\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>A Glenwood Springs City Council discussion about whether or not vacation rentals should be allowed to operate during the COVID-19 crisis ended up having much broader implications.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday night, at its regularly scheduled meeting, city council voted unanimously to temporarily suspend short-term lodging operations in Glenwood Springs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHotels, and places of accommodation\u201d were deemed critical businesses exempt from Gov. Jared Polis\u2019 stay-at-home order.<\/p>\n<p>Critical businesses must still comply with social distancing requirements at all times.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<div class=\"row gspi-donation gspi-donation-mobile p-0\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/03\/PI-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/03\/PI-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/03\/pi-banner-paypal.jpg)\" class=\"col-xl-8 p-3 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/donate\/?utm_source=article&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_campaign=donation&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=mid-article\">Donate<\/a><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cFrom my perspective, legally, I can\u2019t differentiate and I don\u2019t have the facts to differentiate why a VRBO would be different than a hotel,\u201d said Karl Hanlon, Glenwood Springs city attorney.<\/p>\n<p>Altogether, the city has 99 vacation rentals on the grid \u2013 88 short-term rentals and 11 accessory tourist rentals.<\/p>\n<p>Short-term rental owners can rent out their entire property whereas those with an accessory tourist unit can only offer a single room.<\/p>\n<p>Council\u2019s decision to suspend short-term lodging operations not only applies to vacation rentals, but hotels, motels and other forms of accommodation for 30 days or less \u2013 with some exceptions.<\/p>\n<p>According to a news release, lodging facilities can only stay open to accommodate critical business employees or those \u201cperforming a critical government function.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Individuals may also book reservations for \u201cpurposes of obtaining a primary place of residence\u201d the release stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think many of us have family members that may possibly be trying to separate themselves,\u201d Glenwood resident Alesha Frederick said at Thursday\u2019s meeting. \u201cI think we do have to remember that self-regulation is very apparent here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several vacation rentals in Glenwood Springs don\u2019t list any availability until the end of April and multiple hotels and motels have already shut down voluntarily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realize it\u2019s an economic hit and I think we\u2019ve got good citizens running our (vacation rentals),\u201d Councilor Rick Voorhees said. \u201cI believe in self-regulation and I\u2019d like to leave it at that but there\u2019s always one or two loopholes out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While members of city council wanted to accommodate critical workers, they did not want to attract individuals traveling without a significant reason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot afford to overload our infrastructure, it\u2019s not safe,\u201d Councilor Tony Hershey said. \u201cIt\u2019s our job to keep the people of Glenwood Springs safe \u2014 not the people of Denver, not the people of New York, not the people of California or Arizona \u2014 the people of Glenwood Springs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beginning April 6, lodging facilities can no longer accept any new bookings or reservations during the order which lasts through May 7.<\/p>\n<p>Current reservations up to and including May 7 must also be canceled.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, current occupants of lodging facilities can stay until their reservation expires.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"mailto:mabennett@postindependent.com\">mabennett@postindependent.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/glenwood-springs-temporarily-suspends-non-critical-lodging-facilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Post Independent<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fewer vacation rentals for the Glenwood Springs area have appeared on sites like VRBO.com lately.
