Photo courtesy of the Garfield County Sheriff&#8217;s Office<\/strong><br \/><em>DCIM141E90HDYUN_0008.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>A controlled burn ran loose briefly Friday in Garfield County, burning 20-30 acres near Rifle Gap Reservoir.<\/p>\n<p>The Garfield County Sheriff\u2019s Office and Colorado River Fire Rescue responded to a call for a fire on Happy Dog Trail west of Rifle Gap Reservoir around 1:40 p.m. Friday, a news release from the sheriff\u2019s office states.<\/p>\n<p>The fire could easily have been avoided, the news release added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all aware of the extra burden that has been placed on our first responders due to the COVID-19 outbreak in our country and our communities.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<div class=\"row gspi-donation gspi-donation-mobile p-0\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/03\/PI-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/03\/PI-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/03\/pi-banner-paypal.jpg)\" class=\"col-xl-8 p-3 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/donate\/?utm_source=article&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_campaign=donation&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=mid-article\">Donate<\/a><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere are simply not enough firefighter\/EMTs available for COVID-19 response and non-essential burning responses. This is not only due to the limited number of firefighters but with the COVID-19 requirements, there are spacing requirements for firefighter and crew safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Garfield County Sheriff\u2019s Office asks that everyone think twice about whether or not it\u2019s absolutely necessary to burn \u201cthat slash pile or irrigation ditch\u201d right now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to work together to reduce and minimize any additional strain on our firefighters and first responders,\u201d the release states.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate release from the BLM, it was reported that stage 1 fire restrictions are now in place on BLM lands in Garfield, Pitkin and Eagle counties.<\/p>\n<p>That means campfires are only allowed within designated fire grates in developed campgrounds, and no fire of any type \u2014 including charcoal \u2014 is allowed outside of developed areas.<\/p>\n<p>Also barred from BLM lands are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>smoking except within an enclosed vehicle or building, developed recreation site or in a barren area free from vegetation;<\/li>\n<li>Using explosive materials, including exploding targets such as tannerite;<\/li>\n<li>welding or use of acetylene or similar torches with open flame except in an area cleared of vegetation;<\/li>\n<li>operating internal combustion engines without a spark arresting device properly installed and in working order;<\/li>\n<li>As always, fireworks are prohibited on all federal lands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Violating the order is punishable by up to $100,000 in fines or imprisonment for not more than 12 months of both, the BLM news release states.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"11.375899280576\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-7 pt-3 pb-4 gspi-4 pl-4\" readability=\"17.804701627486\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/03\/PI-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo\"><\/p>\n<p>Readers around Glenwood Springs and Garfield County make the Post Independent\u2019s work possible.
