In this photo, Dwight Everett from Camarillo, California donates convalescent plasma at Vitalant&#8217;s Blood Donation Center in Ventura, California.<\/strong><br \/><em>Vitalant convalescent plasma<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>If you recovered from COVID-19, doctors might want your blood plasma to help those still suffering.<\/p>\n<p>Vitalant, the nation\u2019s&nbsp;second-largest independent blood&nbsp;provider,&nbsp;on Wednesday began collecting \u201cconvalescent plasma\u201d donations from recovered COVID-19 patients in Ventura, California. Vitalant works with nearly 1,000 hospitals across 40 states and hopes to scale up the effort.<\/p>\n<p>Vail Valley resident Dr. Nadine Lober and Dr. Alma Juels, assistant professor of anesthesiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, are helping coordinate efforts to collect plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients in the Vail Valley.<\/p>\n<p>Plasma is rich in antibodies that&nbsp;may help COVID-19 sufferers fight off the virus,&nbsp;but it is an experimental treatment, Lober explained.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<div class=\"row vail-donation vail-donation-mobile p-0\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/VD-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/VD-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/vail-banner-paypal.jpg)\" class=\"col-xl-8 p-3 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/donate\/?utm_source=article&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_campaign=donation&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=mid-article\">Donate<\/a><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf you can give plasma with&nbsp;these<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>antibodies, your&nbsp;donation&nbsp;could help multiple&nbsp;people who are in&nbsp;the&nbsp;ICU right now,\u201d Lober said.<\/p>\n<p>As of Thursday evening, Eagle County had 452 COVID-19 cases.<\/p>\n<h3>Who can donate plasma<\/h3>\n<p>Not just anyone can donate&nbsp;convalescent&nbsp;plasma.&nbsp;The FDA is guiding blood centers on how to qualify these donors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Dr. Samantha Mack, this region\u2019s Medical Director for Vitalant, you must meet four criteria:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You need to have&nbsp;a laboratory-confirmed&nbsp;COVID-19 diagnosis&nbsp;or a test demonstrating SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. You need a copy of the test result.<\/li>\n<li>You must be symptom-free for at least 14 days.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019ll need a nasopharyngeal swab for COVID-19 that comes back negative.<\/li>\n<li>You have to qualify as a regular blood donor.&nbsp;Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/valant.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vitalant.org<\/a><i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"><\/i> for more information on general blood donation eligibility.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you\u2019re a Vail Valley resident, Lober is helping to coordinate qualification of donors.&nbsp;Email her at <a href=\"mailto:covid19vail@gmail.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">covid19vail@gmail.com<\/a><i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Vitalant will only accept&nbsp;medically-referred&nbsp;donors who have recovered from COVID-19 and have shown no symptoms for two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>This ensures that only fully recovered individuals are donating, Vitalant Communications Manager Liz Lambert said.<\/p>\n<h3>Two hours to save lives<\/h3>\n<p>It takes about two hours&nbsp;for the whole donation process, Lober said. The sooner recovered COVID-19 sufferers meet those four criteria, the sooner they can be qualified to donate plasma.<\/p>\n<p>Vitalant is working with several hospitals, including some in Denver, to qualify donors and collect convalescent plasma.
