It might not be everyone\u2019s passion to bring justice and equality to those&nbsp;around them, but I believe&nbsp;I have a voice for those who are silenced down.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>CIRC Mountain Regional Organizer Mateo Lozano mentored Ramirez in producing her capstone project. The Know Your Rights training was presented during an information night at GSHS.<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez has been an active participant with AJUA (Association of Youth United in Action), a student group that includes students from Glenwood Springs, Roaring Fork and Basalt High schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was my main motivation for this project,\u201d she said of the group that has been in existence since the plight of so-called Dreamers \u2014 immigrant students who arrived in the United States as young children with their undocumented parents \u2014 started to gain attention during Barack Obama\u2019s first term as president.<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, the group co-organized a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/immigration-reformers-rally-for-permanent-solution-amid-continued-daca-limbo\/\">rally<\/a> outside GSHS along with CIRC, calling attention to the uncertainty for students who qualified under Obama\u2019s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.<\/p>\n<p>That program has since been suspended by President Donald Trump, but the phase-out plan is being challenged in the courts.<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez said she received many congratulations from classmates&nbsp;via social&nbsp;media when her recognition for the Princeton Prize was announced in the school newsletter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of the quarantine&nbsp;I wasn\u2019t&nbsp;able to see anyone face-to-face,\u201d she said of the current school closures and stay-at-home order related to the coronavirus outbreak.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pprize.princeton.edu\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Princeton Prize in Race Relations<\/a><i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"><\/i><\/strong> recognizes and rewards high school students who, through their volunteer activities, \u201chave undertaken significant efforts to advance racial equity and understanding in their schools or communities,\u201d according to the program website.<\/p>\n<p>Committees in 27 regions across the United States award one Princeton Prize, for which Ramirez was the runner-up in Colorado\u2019s region.
