Independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>While working from home has sufficed for some during the COVID-19 crisis, for Glenwood\u2019s first responders, such a luxury was never an option.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the city announced that all 179 of its full-time employees would be furloughed one day, every other week or have their pay reduced by 10%.<\/p>\n<p>According to Glenwood Springs Fire Chief Gary Tillotson, the fire department had been able to maintain necessary staffing levels despite citywide budget <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/city-of-glenwood-springs-cuts-revenue-predictions-by-half-announces-budget-cuts-due-to-covid-19\/\">cuts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re able to schedule it out to where it\u2019s only one person, per day, that we\u2019re down,\u201d Tillotson said. \u201cAnecdotally, less people doing less recreational things has definitely caused a downturn in overall call volume up to this point.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\" readability=\"6\">\n<div class=\"row gspi-donation gspi-donation-mobile p-0\" readability=\"7\">\n<div Chief<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>During the early stages of the pandemic, public health entities across the country put forth messaging about when to call a doctor as opposed to 911 for COVID-19 related help.<\/p>\n<p>The messaging, however, may have led to a few unintended consequences \u2014 particularly for people exhibiting signs of a stroke or heart attack mistakenly thought their symptoms were from COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing this coming out of other regions that have been hit harder by COVID, is people with stroke symptoms\u2026chest pain, might not be calling,\u201d Tillotson said. \u201cIf you think you might be having some heart problems, COVID related or otherwise, don\u2019t hesitate to call 911.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite a few \u201ctense moments\u201d Tillotson said the department had been able to secure enough personal protective equipment for its first responders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are plenty of vendors out there that will advertise (personal protective equipment),\u201d Tillotson said. \u201cWhat they can\u2019t do is deliver in a timely fashion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Tillotson, one member from the fire department had to get tested for COVID-19 but the result came back negative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re keeping their chin up, doing their jobs and they\u2019re just really dedicated people,\u201d Tillotson said. \u201cThey obviously got into this profession because they wanted to help people and they continue to want to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Glenwood PD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Glenwood Springs Police Chief Joseph Deras said the police department was one of the city\u2019s few departments still hiring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a matter of fact, we have a batch of a couple dozen applicants that we are going to be processing here at the end of May,\u201d Deras said.<\/p>\n<p>The department currrently has eight vacant positions, which Deras said he hopes to fill as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>However, given the rigorous application process, Deras did not envision filling all of the department\u2019s sworn personnel positions from the current applicant pool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe prospects of us hiring even more than a few is not real good,\u201d Deras said.<\/p>\n<p>Like the city\u2019s fire department, Glenwood Springs police officers are also taking a one day furlough but still responding to priority calls.<\/p>\n<p>Calls that don\u2019t involve violence but rather require police reports \u2014 generally for insurance purposes \u2014 were often being taken over the phone to limit in-person interactions.<\/p>\n<p>Officers were also wearing face coverings and using \u201cextreme discretion\u201d when taking enforcement action Deras explained.<\/p>\n<p>Deras estimated that the department may have experienced a slight decrease in call volume during the COVID-19 crisis but called any such decline \u201cvery nominal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still busy,\u201d Deras said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Deras, no officers had tested positive for COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p><em><a
