Pack out your trash and don&#8217;t cut chains that lock gates on roads and trails.<\/strong><br \/><em>USFS photo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>People partially freed from quarantine restraints headed into the national forest in droves, but several left a trail of trouble behind, according to White River National Forest officials.<\/p>\n<p>Four people were base-jumping from the cliffs above Hanging Lake in Glenwood Canyon, and one landed in the hospital. The trail to Hanging Lake remains closed, and off-trail travel is never allowed in this area, the Forest Service said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe never want to see people breaking rules and engaging in high-risk behavior, but it\u2019s especially worrisome given the current situation,\u201d White River National Forest Supervisor Scott Fitzwilliams said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to pull emergency officials away from focusing on the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If that\u2019s not enough, every ranger district in the White River National Forest reported finding multiple unattended campfires last weekend.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\" readability=\"6\">\n<div class=\"row vail-donation vail-donation-mobile p-0\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/VD-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/03\/VD-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"handleDonationButtonClickMidArticle()\">Donate<\/button><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t rocket science. Follow the area fire restrictions. If you can have a campfire, enjoy it safely and make sure it is completely out before you leave,\u201d Fitzwilliams said. \u201cIt\u2019s only a matter of time before one of these abandoned campfires sparks a larger fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The National Weather Service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/news\/red-flag-warning-issued-for-eagle-county-stage-2-fire-restrictions-in-place-wednesday\/\">issued fire restrictions last week<\/a>, citing high winds and low humidity.<\/p>\n<h3>A muddy trail is a closed trail<\/h3>\n<p>Chains on several seasonal Forest Service gates were cut to gain access to closed areas. In other areas, people are driving around the gates.<\/p>\n<p>Those trails are closed to keep people from disturbing wildlife and damaging roads, Fitzwilliams said. Several other roads are open but are muddy, and suffered serious damage from motorized travel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease stay off muddy roads. Be patient, these spring conditions will improve,\u201d Fitzwilliams said.<\/p>\n<p>You also need to pack out your trash, Fitzwilliams said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublic lands are a tremendous resource available to us during these stressful times. But people need to be responsible and use common sense.
