LeVan, worked as an art teacher in Nevada and the family was heading back west for the coming school year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlong the way they stopped in Glenwood,\u201d LeVan said. \u201cThey took a look at the paper and saw there was a high school [teacher] position open. So, my dad took that and the rest is history.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\" readability=\"6\">\n<div class=\"row gspi-donation gspi-donation-mobile p-0\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/03\/PI-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/03\/PI-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"handleDonationButtonClickMidArticle()\">Donate<\/button><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>LeVan still calls Glenwood Springs home 59 years later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Country and community<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After attending Glenwood Springs Elementary, Middle and High School, LeVan joined the Air Force in 1980 and was eventually stationed near St. Louis where he served as a hospital and air evac medic for eight years.<\/p>\n<p>While LeVan\u2019s own interest in the medical field originally made him want to join the Air Force, his father\u2019s service as an Army medic in the Korean War certainly inspired him to sign up as well.<\/p>\n<p>Whether in the sky or the intensive care unit, LeVan routinely cared for sick or injured members of the U.S. Armed Forces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe traveled the whole U.S. going to different bases to pick up people who needed further care at bigger hospitals,\u201d LeVan said. \u201cIt was quite an experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following his time in the Air Force, LeVan joined the Army National Guard and eventually returned to the Western Slope where he continued to work as a medic.<\/p>\n<p>Combined, LeVan served his country for 14 years and continues to serve his community today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The last Monday In May<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For as long as LeVan can remember, on the Friday before Memorial Day his dad always placed American flags in Rosebud Cemetery on the gravesites of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p>On the last Monday in May, LeVan\u2019s dad and American Legion Post 83 would also put on a Memorial Day ceremony in Glenwood Springs.<\/p>\n<p>When his father died in 2007, LeVan continued the local Memorial Day tributes that were so dear to his dad.<\/p>\n<p>The Friday before Memorial Day, LeVan, with the help of community volunteers placed 500 American flags throughout Rosebud Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really meaningful,\u201d LeVan said. \u201cProud to be able to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a result of COVID-19, this year\u2019s Memorial Day ceremony was canceled, however, a rifle salute, the playing of \u201cTaps\u201d and the lowering of flags to half-mast were still planned for Monday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Headed to Tucson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following his service in the Air Force and Army National Guard, LeVan, like his dad, also went onto to work for the Roaring Fork School District as an educator and bus driver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is very rewarding,\u201d LeVan said.<\/p>\n<p>This year was LeVan\u2019s last to teach, but will continue to work in the school district next year as a bus driver before retiring.<\/p>\n<p>After living in Glenwood Springs for nearly six decades, LeVan plans to start spending winters in Tucson, Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the weather,\u201d LeVan said. \u201cPlus, it doesn\u2019t have the weeds, trees and grass, which I\u2019m allergic to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"mailto:mabennett@postindependent.com\">mabennett@postindependent.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/monday-profile-dan-levan-continues-to-serve-his-country-and-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Post Independent<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dan LeVan organizes flags to be placed on the graves of veterans at Rosebud Cemetery in preparation for Memorial Day on Friday afternoon.Chelsea Self \/ Post Independent Buy Photo Dan LeVan arrived in the city at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Colorado rivers when he was just six weeks old.
