Brumbaugh owns Venture Sports in Avon and saw the effects of the abrupt halt to business first hand. Business came to a sudden halt in March, allowing him to enjoy more time on the bike and help raise money for others out of work.<\/strong><br \/><em>EverestingChallenge-VDN-052720-2<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>That gave him some confidence in joining Middaugh, an XTERRA world champion who is among the most accomplished bike riders living in Eagle County.<\/p>\n<p>Middaugh said Brumbaugh seemed ready for the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of people who I would say no, this is not a good idea,\u201d Middaugh said. \u201cYou need somebody who has the experience, and has the miles, and (Brumbaugh) did.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Mental challenge\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Those seeking admission into the Everesting Hall of Fame can select a route to accomplish their climb.<\/p>\n<p>Middaugh picked a steep section of nearly 400 vertical feet on the north side of I-70. He did 80 laps, and said he found it quite difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mental challenge of it was pretty rough,\u201d he said. \u201cMy wheelhouse is events that are under three hours. I like to extend beyond that once and a while, but sometimes I\u2019ll really suffer, and this was one of those cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brumbaugh sought out a route on the south side of I-70. Brumbaugh said it went better than expected.<\/strong><br \/><em>EverestingChallenge-VDN-052720-3<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Brumbaugh\u2019s route was 25 laps, 170 miles in total.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJosiah is stronger so he went with a harder and shorter segment, his was probably 50 miles shorter than mine,\u201d Brumbaugh said.<\/p>\n<p>Middaugh finished in time to cross the highway and catch Brumbaugh for his last few laps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe held up surprisingly well,\u201d Middaugh said of Brumbaugh.<\/p>\n<p>Brumbaugh said even he was surprised by how well it went.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe weather was perfect, the traffic was perfect, nothing could have been better,\u201d Burmbaugh said.<\/p>\n<h2>Congratulation donations<\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/app.mobilecause.com\/e\/xd8FSA?vid=8kcl6\" target=\"_blank\">Middaugh and Brumbaugh\u2019s we<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/app.mobilecause.com\/e\/xd8FSA?vid=8kcl6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">b<\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/app.mobilecause.com\/e\/xd8FSA?vid=8kcl6\" target=\"_blank\">site<\/a> will remain open for anyone who wants to congratulate them with a donation.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the Vail Valley Partnership\u2019s community fund to help with rent and food, the proceeds will also be split with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startinghearts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Starting Hearts<\/a>, which installs defibrillators across the valley.<\/p>\n<p>Middaugh said at one point, he thought he might need a Starting Hearts defibrillator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ambulance crew had stopped halfway up to cheer me on,\u201d he said. \u201cThey were in the middle of the road and I thought they could just open the back doors and have me ride right in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/news\/vail-area-locals-josiah-middaugh-mike-brumbaugh-climb-29000-feet-in-everesting-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Vail Daily<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Josiah Middaugh said he was happy to have help from locals who rode with him for part of his more than 100 mile effort on Saturday.Chris Dillmann | cdillmann@vaildaily.com Raising money for locals suffering financially from the COVID-19 pandemic, Josiah Middaugh and Mike Brumbaugh suffered through 29,029 feet of climbing on Saturday.
