It was on this day he recorded \u201cI Walk the Line,\u201d for his freshman <em>With His Hot Hat and Blue Guitar<\/em> album.<\/p>\n<p>The song, which became the third single from the record, shot straight to No.1 when it was released on May 1, 1956. Written by Cash and recorded at Sun Studio in Memphis, Tenn., \u201cI Walk the Line\u201d\u2018s title was suggested by fellow country artist Carl Perkins. Cash wrote the lines, including \u201c<em>As sure as night is dark and day is light \/ I keep you on my mind both day and night \/ And happiness I\u2019ve known proves that it\u2019s right \/ Because you\u2019re mine, I walk the line<\/em>,\u201d with his then-wife, Vivian Liberto, in mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote the song backstage one night in 1956 in Gladewater, Texas,\u201d Cash said. \u201cI was newly married at the time, and I suppose I was laying out my pledge of devotion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cash said that he wrote in 20 minutes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"aH4lsnmfytE\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Johnny Cash Sun Records Show\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aH4lsnmfytE?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fifty-nine years ago today (April 2, 1956) was a career-changing day for Johnny Cash.
