Karla Davis is one of our favorite new artists. We met this soulful singer\/songwriter this week at the KSKE \u00a0studio, where she absolutely floored us with her cover of Girl Crush<\/i>. We also really love getting to know this girl, who has skills and talents that we know will go far in contributing to her continued success!<\/p>\n
Davis has the typical \u201csang in the church choir\u201d background, but she was also a competitive athlete, playing\u00a0multiple sports throughout high school and receiving an athletic scholarship to play for the Women\u2019s Soccer Team at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.\u00a0Davis had always played hard for the win, but Nashville has taught her to shine on her own.<\/p>\n
\u201cI sang in choir in church from the time I was little but that was always with a group of people,\u201d Davis said, \u201cThe idea of singing by myself scared me to death.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the end of her senior year, when her soccer career ended, Davis needed something to keep her busy. \u201cI heard an Alicia Keyes song [Fallen] and thought, \u2018I think I could play this.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Davis hears the chords and plays by ear, her only\u00a0musical education beyond a few early childhood piano lessons. \u201cI was too impatient, so, no, I\u2019ve had no training. No guitar, no voice coach or anything.\u201d<\/p>\n
That\u2019s not so rare in Nashville, according to Davis. \u201cYou can find a lot of people who can play by ear. It\u2019s actually a lot easier when I\u2019m singing with people who can so don\u2019t have to tell them the chords. They just know them.\u201d<\/p>\n
