{"id":791257,"date":"2018-12-12T22:47:53","date_gmt":"2018-12-13T05:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=768508"},"modified":"2018-12-12T22:47:53","modified_gmt":"2018-12-13T05:47:53","slug":"blurred-lines-copyright-suit-against-robin-thicke-pharrell-ends-in-5m-judgment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/blurred-lines-copyright-suit-against-robin-thicke-pharrell-ends-in-5m-judgment\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Blurred Lines\u2019 Copyright Suit Against Robin Thicke, Pharrell Ends in $5M Judgment"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/9244340a.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"\/><\/div>\n<p>A judge has entered a nearly $5 million judgment against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/robin-thicke\/\" id=\"auto-tag_robin-thicke\" data-tag=\"robin-thicke\">Robin Thicke<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/pharrell-williams\/\" id=\"auto-tag_pharrell-williams\" data-tag=\"pharrell-williams\">Pharrell Williams<\/a> in favor of Marvin Gaye\u2019s family in the long-running lawsuit involving copyright infringement surrounding Thicke and Williams\u2019 song \u201cBlurred Lines\u201d and Gaye\u2019s 1977 hit \u201cGot to Give It Up,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/biz\/articles\/news\/legal-and-management\/8490067\/judge-issues-final-5m-judgment-in-blurred-lines-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><em>Billboard<\/em><\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Williams and Thicke appealed a verdict that awarded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/pharrell-williams-robin-thicke-t-i-file-appeal-brief-on-blurred-lines-verdict-251751\/\">$5.3 million in damages<\/a> (the initial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/robin-thicke-pharrell-lose-multi-million-dollar-blurred-lines-lawsuit-35975\/\">March 2015 jury verdict<\/a> resulted in a $7.3 million award, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/blurred-lines-ruling-sliced-to-5-3-million-with-a-catch-120273\/\">judge agreed to cut<\/a> that to $5.3 million), seeking to overturn the ruling, but a federal appeals court upheld the verdict in March 2018.<\/p>\n<p>According to John A. Kronstadt\u2019s new amended judgment, Thicke, Williams and Williams\u2019 More Water From Nazareth Publishing Inc. are jointly required to pay Gaye\u2019s family. They jointly owe damages of $2,848,846.50. Meanwhile, Thicke has been ordered to pay an additional $1,768,191.88 and Williams and his publishing company will pay another $357,630.97 to the Gaye family.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, The Gaye family is entitled to receive prejudgment interest on the damages award and respective profits against each of them, which totals to $9097.51.
