{"id":791354,"date":"2018-12-17T07:03:54","date_gmt":"2018-12-17T14:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=770008"},"modified":"2018-12-17T07:03:54","modified_gmt":"2018-12-17T14:03:54","slug":"joe-osborn-wrecking-crew-bassist-dead-at-81","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/joe-osborn-wrecking-crew-bassist-dead-at-81\/","title":{"rendered":"Joe Osborn, Wrecking Crew Bassist, Dead at 81"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/GettyImages-84859810.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Joe Osborn, the bassist in the famed Wrecking Crew, the group of studio musicians who performed on tracks like Simon &amp; Garfunkel\u2019s \u201cBridge Over Troubled Water\u201d and the Mamas &amp; the Papas\u2019 \u201cCalifornia Dreamin\u2019,\u201d has died at the age of 81.<\/p>\n<p>Denny Tedesco, the director of the 2008 documentary <em>The Wrecking Crew<\/em>, confirmed to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> that Osborn died December 14th following a long battle with pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The Louisiana-born Osborn entered the music business as a member of Ricky Nelson\u2019s backing band and appeared on the pop singer\u2019s 1961 hit \u201cTravelin\u2019 Man\u201d before the bassist moved to Los Angeles in 1964; soon after, Lou Adler and Bones Howe recruited to join their iteration of the Wrecking Crew, a team of elite session musicians often called upon by the Beach Boys, Phil Spector, the Monkees and more.<\/p>\n<p>As a member of the Wrecking Crew, Osborn contributed to hit singles like the Fifth Dimension\u2019s \u201cAquarius\/Let the Sunshine In,\u201d Tommy Roe\u2019s \u201cDizzy,\u201d Grass Roots\u2019 \u201cMidnight Confessions,\u201d the Association\u2019s \u201cWindy,\u201d Richard Harris\u2019 \u201cMacArthur Park,\u201d Simon &amp; Garfunkel\u2019s \u201cThe Only Living Boy in New York\u201d and \u201cBridge Over Troubled Water,\u201d America\u2019s \u201cVentura Highway\u201d and the Carpenters\u2019 \u201cClose to You.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bPYT9Vyu62A?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Osborn often performed alongside fellow Wrecking Crew members drummer Hal Blaine and keyboardist Larry Knechtel; that trio played on the original Los Angeles cast recording of <em>Rocky Horror Picture Show<\/em> in 1974 and the Partridge Family\u2019s hit \u201cI Think I Love You.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a decade-long association with the Wrecking Crew, Osborn moved from Los Angeles to Nashville, where he soon became one of country music\u2019s most in-demand session musicians, performing on Merle Haggard, Reba McEntire, Chet Atkins and Kenny Rogers, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/music\/news\/joe-osborn-wrecking-crew-bassist-dies-simon-and-garfunkel-1203090975\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Variety<\/em> reports<\/a>. <em>The Wrecking Crew<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WreckingCrewFilm\/videos\/943018435886643\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">stated<\/a> that Osborn appeared on 53 Number One country hits.<\/p>\n<p>Osborn also played on both Neil Young\u2019s 1978 album <em>Comes a Time<\/em> and 1985\u2019s <em>Old Ways<\/em>, both partially recorded in Nashville, as well as Billy Joel\u2019s Cold Spring Harbor, Bob Dylan\u2019s <em>Self Portrait<\/em>, the Beach Boys\u2019 <em>Sunflower<\/em> and Paul Simon\u2019s self-titled solo album.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I started this documentary, it was very difficult to get to all the players around the country. But there was no way I was not going to make the trip out to meet Joe,\u201d Tedesco wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WreckingCrewFilm\/videos\/943018435886643\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Wrecking Crew<\/em> film\u2019s Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe made sure he found time for me to do that interview which was so important to the history of the Wrecking Crew. Over the years, he was always there when we needed him for a concert or screening. Even though he was a quiet man, I could see the sparkle in his eyes when he saw the love of his fans. I called him a gentle bear. He made his impact in Rock and Roll and Country. First called session bass player in two cities; Los Angeles and Nashville. My favorite line from Joe. He was asked why he kept the same strings on his bass for 17 years.
