Independent Chicago rapper Noname<\/a> kicked off the new year by unveiling her first new song of 2019, \u201cSong 31.\u201d It\u2019s also her first new music since releasing Room 25<\/em>, named one of Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s Best Hip-Hop Albums<\/a> of 2018.<\/p>\n

Over winsome, jazz-tipped melodies, the rapper poetically rhymes about the drive and need to make money and its adverse societal effects. \u201cI sell pain for profit, not propaganda\/ I know cancer\u2019s origin linked to Santa\/ I know Santa\u2019s origins linked to money\/ Mass production of cattle\/ Slaughtering for the yummy,\u201d she raps, before skillfully tying in the emotional costs paid to the prison system.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese niggas is clever\/ The prison is no better\/ The ghost of the living\/ We ain\u2019t talking about Reggie,\u201d she raps on the final verse. \u201cOn Christmas we almost forget him\/ What\u2019s a casket to a holdin\u2019 cell\/ If a nigga ain\u2019t in it\/ Only reason why I\u2019m steady fadin\u2019 and still independent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSong 31\u201d follows the release of Noname\u2019s first-ever music video for \u201cBlaxploitation<\/a>,\u201d which she released in December and she made her television debut<\/a> on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert<\/em>\u00a0in October. The rapper embarks on her 2019 tour<\/a> in support of Room 25<\/em> on Wednesday at Majestic Theatre in Detroit, Michigan.<\/p>\n
