Gary Oldman<\/a> narrates a visual history of David Bowie<\/a>\u2019s 1974 Diamond Dogs Tour in this exclusive clip from the upcoming David Bowie Is<\/em>\u00a0mobile app<\/a> that turns the acclaimed museum exhibit<\/a> into an augmented reality experience.<\/p>\n

The 1974 trek featured an amalgamation of \u201ccontemporary music and theatre several years ahead of its time\u201d as Bowie worked with \u201ca stellar lineup of theatrical collaborators quite unlike that of any previous rock tour,\u201d Oldman says in the David Bowie Is<\/em> app. The app allows users to comb through hand-drawn stage sketches and wardrobe ideas for the Diamond Dogs Tour.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tour\u2019s dystopian cityscape aesthetic was inspired by George Orwell\u2019s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four<\/em>,\u201d Oldman added before noting that midway through the trek, Bowie began to focus on his next LP Young Americans<\/em> and soon stripped the dystopian elements from the stage show.<\/p>\n

The David Bowie Is<\/em> app arrives on January 8th, which marks what would have been Bowie\u2019s 72nd birthday. The creators of the app revealed<\/a> on Thursday that Oldman would provide the narration for the museum exhibit\u2019s adaptation into the digital realm.<\/p>\n

Bowie and Oldman were both born and raised in South London and first met in the late 1980s and became close friends; they appeared together in Julian Schnabel\u2019s 1996 film\u00a0Basquiat<\/em>, and Oldman starred as a priest in Bowie\u2019s controversial 2013 video for \u201cThe Next Day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis brings the amazing\u00a0David Bowie Is<\/em>\u00a0exhibition to a wider audience. It\u2019s great that his fans get to experience it,\u201d Oldman said in a statement. Additionally, the app features 3D renderings of Bowie artifacts that appeared when David Bowie Is resided in museums in London and Brooklyn.<\/p>\n
