A Namibian artist is cementing what Toto<\/a> fans have always known: \u201cAfrica\u201d is eternal. Max Siedentopf<\/a> has created a sound installation in the coastal Namib Desert that will pump out the chart-topping 1982 single on a continuous loop \u2013 using solar batteries \u201cto keep Toto going for all eternity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[I] wanted to pay the song the ultimate homage and physically exhibit \u2018Africa\u2019 in Africa,\u201d the 27-year-old artist\u00a0told the\u00a0BBC<\/a>. \u201cSome [Namibians] love it, and some say it\u2019s probably the worst sound installation ever. I think that\u2019s a great compliment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Siedentopf selected an undisclosed location for the installation, utilizing six speakers attached to an MP3 player containing \u201cAfrica\u201d \u2013\u00a0and \u201cAfrica\u201d alone. He hopes the nearly five-minute cut, filled with glossy synthesizers and layered percussion, will continue to play for many years \u2013 or at least until nature takes its toll. \u201cMost parts of the installation were chosen to be as durable as possible,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I\u2019m sure the harsh environment of the desert will devour the installation eventually.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
