Jay-Z\u2019s music-streaming service Tidal<\/a>, which was the subject of a major report of\u00a0fraudulent streaming numbers<\/a> for Beyonc\u00e9 and Kanye West albums last year, is under investigation from Norwegian authorities, according to\u00a0Dagens N\u00e6ringsliv<\/em>, the newspaper that published the original claims.<\/p>\n

Last May,\u00a0Dagens N\u00e6ringsliv<\/em>\u00a0alleged, off of internal data it acquired from an unnamed source, that Tidal had intentionally falsified streaming numbers for two albums \u2014\u00a0The Life of Pablo\u00a0<\/em>by Kanye West and\u00a0Lemonade<\/em> by Beyonc\u00e9, whose husband owns most of the music-streaming service \u2014 to inflate royalties for those works and cheat other artists out of payouts.<\/p>\n

Tidal has repeatedly denied the accusation, calling it a \u201csmear campaign\u201d and a \u201cridiculous story,\u201d and the streaming service later launched an internal investigation into a potential data breach<\/a> within its ranks, searching for an employee who might have leaked and later manipulated the company\u2019s streaming data. (If there were substantive findings, Tidal did not announce them.) The newspaper reported on Monday that Norway\u2019s authority for investigation of economic and environmental crimes is in an \u201cearly stage\u201d of looking into the charges.<\/p>\n

At least four former Tidal employees have been interviewed before a judge, who\u2019s overseen more than 25 hours of questioning on the matter, according to\u00a0DN<\/em>. Tidal responded with the following statement on Monday, saying it continues to reject DN<\/em>\u2018s claims of streaming falsification and is cooperating with the case: \u201cTidal is not a suspect in the investigation. We are communicating with \u00d8kokrim [the Norwegian authority]. From the very beginning, DN<\/em> has quoted documents that they have not shared with us in spite of repeated requests. DN<\/em> has repeatedly made claims based on information we believe may be falsified. We are aware that at least one person we suspected of theft has been questioned. We cannot comment further at this time and refer to our previous statement, which still stands.\u201d<\/p>\n

DN<\/em>\u00a0has also alleged, in a separate report last year, that Tidal\u2019s self-proclaimed base of 3 million users is intentionally inflated \u2014 but that number does not seem to be a focus in the official Norwegian investigation into the streaming service\u2019s reported data.\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/em> will update with more details on the investigation as it develops.<\/p>\n
