In 1986, relations between Keith Richards<\/a> and Mick Jagger were at an all-time low. The Stones were on hold while Jagger toured as a solo act behind his 1987 album Primitive Cool<\/em>, and the two traded endless insults in the press.<\/p>\n

So Keith Richards decided to do something he\u2019d always held off on: form his own solo band. The X-Pensive Winos featured an eclectic crew including Waddy Wachtel (Warren Zevon, the Everly Brothers), drummer Steve Jordan (who played with Richards in the Chuck Berry tribute concert film Hail! Hail! Rock & Roll<\/em>),\u00a0 bassist-drummer Charley Drayton and drummer Ivan Neville. Recording outside Quebec, the chemistry was clear from early on when they laid down the swaggering opener \u201cTake it So Hard.\u201d \u201cI went back to the hosue going, \u2018we\u2019ve conquered Everest already?\u2019 Wachtel said later. In his autobiography Life<\/em>, Richards said, \u201cThere\u2019s no way you can stand in front of the Winos without getting off. It\u2019s a surefire high. It was so hot you could hardly believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The result is Talk is Cheap<\/em>, an endearingly ragged classic considered by many fans the best Rolling Stones-related release of the last three decades. From the stomping open-G anthem \u201cTake it So Hard\u201d to the Memphis soul ballad \u201cMake No Mistake,\u201d it captures Richards nailing everything he\u2019s good at \u2013\u00a0hear the throwback Sun-style rocker \u201cI Could Have Stood You Up.\u201d<\/p>\n

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, on March 29th the album will finally be reissued as a huge box set that includes the album on CD and vinyl, six unreleased tracks from the sessions and an 80-page book featuring a new interview with Richards. There an even more extravagant \u201csuper deluxe\u201d box set that comes in a case that replaces Richards\u2019 guitar case made by the Fender Custom Shop.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis album holds up,\u201c Keith Richards says. \u201cI\u2019ve been listening to it and not through the mists of nostalgia either because it doesn\u2019t affect me that way. This is more than the sum of its parts. I really admire it. We were having fun and you can hear it.\u201d<\/p>\n
