This week in history as reported by the Summit County Journal 100 years ago \u2014 Jan. 19, 1919<\/p>\n
A mass meeting has been called for next Tuesday evening at the courthouse for the purpose of discussing matters pertaining to the welfare of returning soldiers.<\/p>\n
In view of the return of thousands of soldiers from army camps in this country and from overseas, who will face the necessity of earning a livelihood with the probability that there will not be enough jobs for all of them, it is thought that some means might be devised through action on the part of the state legislature to provide industrial openings for these men.<\/p>\n
NEW ORDER WILL REDUCE NUMBER OF FIRES IN COLORADO AND WYOMING<\/p>\n
In Colorado and Wyoming from 1900 to 1915, inclusive railroads were known to have 700 forest fires, or 17.8 percent of forest fires from all known causes, according to Prof. W.J. Merrill of the Colorado Agricultural College.<\/p>\n
Prof. Merrill says: “All fires set by locomotives have been due to defective spark arresters and carelessness with the ash pans and hoppers. Federal and state authorities have endeavored many times to have these evils corrected, their efforts have frequently been useless.”<\/p>\n
Considerable hope for fewer fires has been aroused from a recent order by the U.S. Railroad administration in the railroads ordering a careful inspection of every part of the spark arrester appliances in the front end of each locomotive at intervals of no more than seven days. It is also ordered that the slide or hopper be frequently inspected to see that these appliances shut tightly and operate properly.<\/p>\n
MARRIED TWO WEEKS, MRS. R.R. DUNCAN WANTS A DIVORCE<\/p>\n
Mrs. R.R. Duncan, formerly Mrs. Belle Kline, after two weeks approximately of married life with R.R. Duncan, is now seeking a divorce.<\/p>\n
Mrs. Duncan, it is said, had been divorced from her former husband, Kline about three months before her marriage to Duncan.<\/p>\n
VICTIMS OF GAMBLING RAID UP FOR HEARING ON FEB. 2<\/p>\n
The several young men of Breckenridge who were placed under arrest some weeks ago on a charge of gambling will be brought before the county court for a hearing on Feb. 2.<\/p>\n
The hearing before the county court had been scheduled for next Monday. The men were said to have been discovered in the act of gambling during a raid by the authorities.<\/p>\n
WELLINGTON COMPANY IS SHIPPING 500 TONS ORE CONCENTRATES<\/p>\n
Last night the Wellington Mines company began hauling zinc concentrates to the old sampler near the railroad station and expect to make a shipment of about 500 tons of ore.<\/p>\n
It is reported that an increased number of men are employed in the mines and the mills of this company.<\/p>\n
