As a result, other often better-known rappers have appeared to capitalize on the late songwriter\u2019s buzz with so-called \u201ctributes.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/lil-pump-xxxtentacion-swae-lee-maluma-arms-around-you-video-757457\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lil Pump\u2019s \u201cArms Around You\u201d featuring XXX, Swae Lee and Maluma<\/a> became a\u00a0<em>Billboard<\/em> Hot 100 hit.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/kanye-west-has-two-different-apologies-broadway-xxxtentacion-766108\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kanye West released a feature on XXX\u2019s song \u201cOne Minute.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0These are popular, catchy songs. But the awkward truth is that these artists mined the unused recordings of a rapper whom they didn\u2019t know while he was alive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/lil-wayne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lil Wayne\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/lil-wayne-dont-cry-colbert-768610\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cDon\u2019t Cry\u201d<\/a> is the latest in this transparent trend. The Jay &amp; Georgio Rodriguez-directed music video features Weezy sitting in the tundra as a large crystal protrudes from the ground. After Wayne goes through a few wardrobe changes and gets served wine by a nun, the mysterious crystal shoots a beam into space. If the crystal, nun and bloody throne are metaphors they aren\u2019t easy to parse. What is pretty pretty obvious is XXX\u2019s part: a black-and-white montage of XXX\u2019s various performances appears when during his chorus.<\/p>\n<p>During an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KKR8MDJeEaM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Elliot Wilson for his CRWN series<\/a>, Lil Wayne explained why he didn\u2019t know who XXXTentacion was before his death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay he rest in peace. Y\u2019all know I don\u2019t listen to nothing but myself cause I work too much, so I didn\u2019t know who XXXtentacion was. Mack had to explain the whole story to me right? Then and there I had to google and all that and I found out, figured everything out. It was easy.
