The songwriter\u2019s publicist also confirmed Legrand\u2019s death to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2019\/music\/news\/michel-legrand-dies-dead-oscar-winning-composer-1203119247\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Variety<\/em><\/a>, adding that he died early Saturday at his Paris home with his wife, French actress Macha Meril, by his side. His cause of death has not yet been revealed.<\/p>\n<p>Former and current presidents of the Cannes Film Festival Gilles Jacob and Pierre Lescure expressed their condolences to the Paris-born legend\u00a0on\u00a0Twitter. The French composer <a href=\"http:\/\/michellegrandofficial.com\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">won five Grammys:<\/a> two for his 1975 jazz record <em>Images<\/em>, Best Instrumental Grammys for \u201cThe Summer Knows,\u201d the theme from 1971\u2019s\u00a0<em>Summer of \u201942<\/em>\u00a0and \u201cBrian\u2019s Song\u201d (1972) as well as a Grammy for arranging a 1972 record alongside Sarah Vaughan.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WEhS9Y9HYjU?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The award-winning composer also\u00a0earned 13 Oscar nominations and took home three awards for \u201cThe Windmills of Your Mind\u201d from <em>The Thomas Crown Affair,<\/em>\u00a0the score for <em>Summer of \u201942<\/em>\u00a0and the musical score for <em>Yentl ;<\/em> Legrand wrote the music for that film\u2019s Barbra Streisand hit \u201cPapa, Can You Hear Me?\u201d\u00a0He also received three nominations for his most famous work, the 1965 classic\u00a0<em>The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>As a recording artist, Legrand released more than 100 albums alongside his many soundtracks. He was also regarded as a prolific jazz pianist, with his 1959 record\u00a0<em>Legrand Jazz<\/em> featuring legends like\u00a0Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ben Webster, Bill Evans and Phil Woods. Legrand later recorded jazz albums with Stan Getz, Bud Shank, Oscar Peterson, Stephane Grappelli and Arturo Sandoval.<\/p>\n<p>His last credited work before his death was for the 2018 French film\u00a0<em>J\u2019ai perdu Albert<\/em>.
