{"id":792450,"date":"2019-01-28T10:13:07","date_gmt":"2019-01-28T17:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=785365"},"modified":"2019-01-28T10:13:07","modified_gmt":"2019-01-28T17:13:07","slug":"mountain-goats-create-dragon-noir-genre-with-new-album-in-league-with-dragons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/mountain-goats-create-dragon-noir-genre-with-new-album-in-league-with-dragons\/","title":{"rendered":"Mountain Goats Create \u2018Dragon Noir\u2019 Genre With New Album \u2018In League With Dragons\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/mountain-goats-in-league-with-dragons.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"\/><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-mountain-goats\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-mountain-goats\" data-tag=\"the-mountain-goats\">The Mountain Goats<\/a> aim to sculpt a new musical genre, \u201cdragon noir,\u201d on the band\u2019s new album <em>In League With Dragons<\/em>, the latest LP and partial rock opera from John Darnielle\u2019s prolific indie rock outfit.<\/p>\n<p>The band recorded the 12-song <em>In League With Dragons<\/em> with producer Matt Ross-Spang at Nashville\u2019s Blackbird Studios.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis album began life as a rock opera about a besieged seaside community called Riversend ruled by a benevolent wizard, for which some five to seven songs were written,\u201d Darnielle said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I worked on the Riversend stuff, weird noir visions started creeping in\u2026 I thought these moods helped complicate the wizards and dragons a little, and, as I thought about my wizard, his health failing, the invasion by sea almost certain to wipe out half his people, I thought about what such a person might look like in the real world: watching a country show at a midwestern casino, or tryout pitching for an American League team years after having lit up the marquees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere in this equation fits \u201cYounger,\u201d the sprawling first single from <em>In League With Dragons<\/em>, with Darnielle weaving a languid tale amid a mounting wave of acoustic guitars and horns that meld into a clarion call.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/987MTbOl0mc?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Darnielle concluded, \u201cI am earnestly hoping that a new genre called \u2018dragon noir\u2019 will spring from the forehead of nearly two years\u2019 work on these songs, but, if not, I am content for this to be the sole example of the style.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>In League With Dragons<\/em> arrives April 26th via Merge; the album is available to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mergerecords.com\/in-league-with-dragons\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">preorder<\/a> now.
