Maroon 5<\/a>\u2019s Adam Levine<\/a> spoke with Entertainment Tonight<\/a><\/em>\u00a0in a segment that aired on Thursday to discuss his band\u2019s decision to perform the Super Bowl<\/a> LIII halftime show, which he described as \u201cthe biggest gig in the game.\u201d Criticism has surrounded the Super Bowl and the NFL for its treatment of Colin Kaepernick. Artists, including Rihanna and Cardi B<\/a>, declined to perform during the halftime set, in support of Kaepernick.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know I think that when you look back at every single halftime show, people just can\u2019t \u2013 it\u2019s this like insatiable urge to hate a little bit,\u201d Levine told ET<\/em>\u2018s Kevin Frazier. \u201cI\u2019m not in the right profession if I can\u2019t handle a little bit of controversy. It\u2019s what it is. We expected it. We\u2019d like to move on from it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levine said he discussed the decision to perform during the Big Game with \u201cmany people,\u201d but, \u201cI silenced all the noise and listened to myself, and made my decision based on upon how I felt about it all.\u201d<\/p>\n

The singer emphasized that the focus is the music. \u201cThe spectacle is the music,\u201d he said of their upcoming performance. \u201cThe way that we speak is through the music. The way that we emote and perform is through the music.\u201d In addition to Maroon 5, Big Boi and Travis Scott will also perform. \u201cThis is the show that\u2019s gonna have the biggest hip-hop presence that there\u2019s ever been on the show,\u201d Levine said while discussing Scott\u2019s appearance. \u201cI can\u2019t look back and find that to have been the case before. So, he\u2019s it. He\u2019s the man right now and he comes in hot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levine admitted that the decision to do the halftime show did not come lightly. \u201cNo one thought about it harder than I did,\u201d he said. \u201cNo one put more thought and love into this than I did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt took a lot of looking inward, it took a lot of introspection,\u201d he added. \u201cI thought to myself, \u2018What\u2019s my greatest tool, what\u2019s the thing that I can use to express myself and what\u2019s the best way for the band to express themselves, and how are we going to do it this year? What do we owe ourselves? What do we owe the people?\u2019 And that\u2019s what we did. And I\u2019m beyond proud of the finished product and literally, I\u2019ve never been more excited in my entire life to present this to people because I believe that it\u2019s truly a reflection of all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

ET<\/em>\u2018s exclusive interview with Adam Levine aired on Thursday on CBS. Levine\u2019s ET<\/em> interview was the only media appearance made ahead of Maroon 5\u2019s halftime performance. Levine told ET<\/em> that the NFL made the decision to nix the customary press conference that was originally scheduled to take place prior to their halftime show. The Super Bowl airs on February 3rd on CBS.<\/p>\n
