Cardi B<\/a> confirmed in a new interview that she declined<\/a> to perform at the Super Bowl<\/a> LIII halftime show due to her support of Colin Kaepernick<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the Associated Press<\/em><\/a> two days before Super Sunday, the rapper admitted she had \u201cmixed feelings\u201d about turning down the NFL\u2019s invitation but opted to \u201cstand behind\u201d Kaepernick after the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback \u201cstood up\u201d for minorities with his anthem protests.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy husband [Offset], he loves football. His kids play football. It\u2019s really hard for him\u2026 He really wants to go to the Super Bowl, but he can\u2019t go to the Super Bowl, because he\u2019s got to stand for something,\u201d Cardi B said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to sacrifice that. I got to sacrifice a lot of money to perform. But there\u2019s a man who sacrificed his job for us, so we got to stand behind him.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Grammy-nominated rapper, coming off a breakthrough 2018, seemed like a shoo-in for the halftime show due to her hit single \u201cGirls Like You\u201d with Maroon 5, the Super Bowl LIII halftime headliner.<\/p>\n

However, in December, Cardi B\u2019s reps revealed that the rapper turned down the Super Bowl invitation<\/a>, \u201cThere [were] talks about it, but she was not particularly interested in participating because of how she feels about Colin Kaepernick and the whole movement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead of participating in the Super Bowl itself, Cardi B \u2013 like artists including Migos, Aerosmith, Bruno Mars and more \u2013 headed to Atlanta to perform at the Super Bowl Music Fest<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hear people saying like \u2018Oh, y\u2019all are saying all this stuff about the Super Bowl, but you\u2019re doing all these parties,\u2019\u201d Cardi B told the AP<\/em>. \u201cAnd it\u2019s like, well, if the NFL could benefit off from us, then I\u2019m going to benefit off y\u2019all. Y\u2019all make the most money off our people. Why am I not going to take advantage of y\u2019all and take money from y\u2019all too? Because of y\u2019all, we are getting these parties. OK, thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n
