{"id":792939,"date":"2019-02-11T09:06:42","date_gmt":"2019-02-11T16:06:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=791526"},"modified":"2019-02-11T09:06:42","modified_gmt":"2019-02-11T16:06:42","slug":"hear-r-e-m-sleater-kinney-supergroups-new-song","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/hear-r-e-m-sleater-kinney-supergroups-new-song\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear R.E.M.\/Sleater-Kinney Supergroup\u2019s New Song"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Almost two years since they released their last album, Filthy Friends, which features <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/sleater-kinney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sleater-kinney\" data-tag=\"sleater-kinney\">Sleater-Kinney<\/a>\u2019s Corin Tucker and R.E.M.\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/peter-buck\/\" id=\"auto-tag_peter-buck\" data-tag=\"peter-buck\">Peter Buck<\/a>, are returning with another, <em>Emerald Valley<\/em>. The first track they\u2019re releasing off the album, which is due out May 3rd, is the punkish \u201cLast Chance County.\u201d Tucker sings about feeling stuck and down on her luck as Buck plays urgent riffs over the band\u2019s throbbing rhythms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about a teenage girl riding the bus through a depressed Northwest town in the 1980s, a version of myself and the frustration I saw there,\u201d Tucker tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cRiding the bus to work, I saw people struggling to make ends meet and make sense of their lives. It\u2019s disheartening that 30 years later, the struggle for working people might be even greater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I heard the vocal I told her it sounded like a pissed off 14-year-old,\u201d Buck says. \u201cShe just raised an eyebrow at me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I was a pretty pissed off 14-year-old,\u201d Tucker rejoins.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-791817 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Filthy-Friends-Filthy-Friends-Peter-Corin-Lo-Res-Photo-By-John-Clark.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Kill Rock Stars, Filthy Friends, peter buck, corin tucker\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Usually, Buck writes the music for entire songs and Tucker writes her own lyrics and adds vocals and guitar. \u201cLast Chance County\u201d was unusual, though, because she had the chords and what she describes as \u201cthe bratty vocal.\u201d The two of them worked out the chorus together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no set rules of how we write together,\u201d she says. \u201cI love that Peter is always totally open to trying different ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The record contains 10 new songs that build upon the sound they came up with on their debut, <em>Invitation<\/em>. Depending on the song, Tucker sings about topics like the oil industry (\u201cPipeline\u201d) and gentrification (\u201cOne Flew East\u201d). \u201cI love that we can do a song like \u2018Pipeline,\u2019 such a real mood piece that holds back the entire time with a sense of restraint that puts the songwriting front and center,\u201d Tucker says.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the record is a tribute to where Tucker grew up. She named it after a nickname for Eugene, Oregon, where she grew up. \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful, green, lush valley filled with hippies, yuppies, loggers, farmers, migrant workers all trying to make a life for themselves,\u201d she says. \u201cWe try and paint a picture of that for people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first record was kind of put together on the fly, using time I booked to do my solo albums,\u201d Buck says. \u201cOnce we toured and figured out what we were capable of, we really tried to stretch out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The record is <a href=\"http:\/\/smarturl.it\/emeraldvalley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">available for preorder<\/a> now, and the \u201cLast Chance County\u201d single will be available tomorrow.
