It was her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/chart-beat\/8484401\/ariana-grande-thank-u-next-hot-100-first-number-one-debut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">first Number One on the <em>Billboard<\/em> Hot 100<\/a>, served as the launching point for one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/how-ariana-grande-made-thank-u-next-album-792233\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grande\u2019s most successful projects<\/a>\u00a0and proved that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/ariana-grande-new-release-strategy-thank-u-next-763458\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pop star looking to hip-hop<\/a> for inspiration in the streaming age could pay immense dividends. During an interview on the Zach Sang Show, Grande described how nerves about including the names of her exes on \u201cThank U, Next\u201d inspired her to experiment with different lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had like three different versions of the song,\u201d Grande said. \u201cI\u2019m like super shy when it comes to pitching wild things, so I was like, \u2018Is it insane if I name people and thank them directly in the song?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tommy Brown, a \u201cThank U, Next\u201d producer and frequent Grande collaborator, explained in the interview that all of the people in the studio knew the original version was the version they should use, but Grande needed to try different approaches. Ariana is careful not to mention Pete Davidson\u2019s name, but alludes to a potential marriage that affected the song.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my relationship at the time, things were like up and down and on and off, and so I didn\u2019t know what was going to happen and then we got back together. So I had to make a different version of it, and then we broke up again, so we ended up going with that verse. There\u2019s a version where I was getting married, there\u2019s a version where I\u2019m not getting married, there\u2019s a version with nothing.
