Kurt Vile<\/a> has selected 33 of his favorite Neil Young<\/a> songs for a new playlist on Young\u2019s online archives website<\/a>. \u201cStumblin\u2019 With Neil\u201d is the first-ever guest playlist on the Neil Young Archives, which recently opened<\/a> to the public with a plethora of high-quality streaming music, photos and more. \u201cI\u2019m proud,\u201d Vile writes in a note accompanying the playlist. \u201cI\u2019m inspired. I CAN\u2019T FUCKING BELIEVE the good people at Neil Young Archives have presented me with the greatest of honors in a territory uncharted.\u201d<\/p>\n

The songs on Vile\u2019s playlist survey Young\u2019s career from 1973 onward, with plenty of well-known classics (\u201cRockin\u2019 in the Free World,\u201d \u201cCortez the Killer,\u201d about half of On the Beach<\/em>) along with some deeper and newer cuts. For Vile, a lifelong Young fan, making the playlist was \u201ca piece of cake, of course\u201d: He recalls being \u201cbackstage in Milwaukee\u2026head bobbing to the sound of my laptop for hours until I had to go onstage and guess what? Best show of the tour, that\u2019s what.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Philadelphia singer-songwriter is particularly enthusiastic about \u201cWhen Your Lonely Heart Breaks,\u201d an understated ballad from 1987\u2019s Life<\/em>. \u201cThe way Crazy Horse harmonize those devastating lyrics with Neil\u2026\u201d Vile writes. \u201cOnly adults with some of their wild years behind them could perform something like that with such a chilling sad beauty and perspective, living it right there in front of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vile is currently touring the U.S. behind Bottle It In<\/a><\/em>, which Rolling Stone<\/em> named the ninth-best album of 2018<\/a>. Young\u2019s staff seem to agree: An unsigned note says Bottle It In<\/em> \u201chas been in such heavy rotation in the Archives office that it\u2019s crept into at least one archivist\u2019s dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n
