{"id":793099,"date":"2019-02-15T09:55:04","date_gmt":"2019-02-15T16:55:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=795382"},"modified":"2019-02-15T09:55:04","modified_gmt":"2019-02-15T16:55:04","slug":"hear-previously-unreleased-tom-petty-song-for-real","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/hear-previously-unreleased-tom-petty-song-for-real\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear Previously Unreleased Tom Petty Song \u2018For Real\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/9065625dbW.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"\/><\/div>\n<p>The upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/tom-petty\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tom-petty\" data-tag=\"tom-petty\">Tom Petty<\/a> two-disc retrospective <em>The Best of Everything<\/em> is packed with familiar tunes like \u201cAmerican Girl,\u201d \u201cI Won\u2019t Back Down\u201d and \u201cMary Jane\u2019s Last Dance,\u201d but it wraps up with a song that has never been released or even heard on bootlegs: \u201cFor Real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear when Petty recorded the autobiographical song, but it\u2019s essentially a declaration of purpose by the late singer\/songwriter. \u201cDidn\u2019t do it for no magazine,\u201d he sings. \u201cDidn\u2019t do it for no video\/Never did it for no CEO\/But I did it for real\/Would have done it for free\/I did it for me\/\u2019Cuz it was all that rang true\/I did it for real\/And I did it for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Best of Everything<\/em> (out March 11th) is the second posthumous Tom Petty release after the 2018 box set An <em>American Treasure<\/em>, which skipped the obvious hits in favor of lesser-known tunes and unreleased material. <em>The Best of Everything<\/em> is geared more towards casual fans, though there are many songs like \u201cSquare One,\u201d \u201cDreamville\u201d and \u201cTrailer\u201d that never got much radio play. There\u2019s also a previously-unreleased version of <em>Southern Accent<\/em>\u2018s \u201cThe Best of Everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No exact plans have been set, but last year Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/tom-petty-wildflowers-fillmore-shows-722069\/\">told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> that he hopes to release a live album drawn from the band\u2019s 1997 stand at the Fillmore West at some point. \u201cFor me, that was almost the pinnacle of the band just being totally spontaneous night to night to night,\u201d he said. \u201cWe might throw in a Grateful Dead song that we just learned that afternoon. We recorded every show and we had guest artists from Bo Diddley to Roger McGuinn to John Lee Hooker. And I know, in my memory of those 20 nights, there\u2019s an amazing album in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are also plans to finally release a <em>Wildflowers<\/em> box set complete with numerous unreleased songs from those sessions. After it comes out, the Heartbreakers might even play a special <em>Wildflowers<\/em> show with guest singers. \u201cIt would be a great tribute to Tom to just do that album,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/mike-campbell-heartbreakers-tom-petty-724996\/\">said Campbell.<\/a> \u201cWe\u2019d probably have four or five different guest singers with us.
