{"id":793128,"date":"2019-02-16T11:49:17","date_gmt":"2019-02-16T18:49:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=795835"},"modified":"2019-02-16T11:49:17","modified_gmt":"2019-02-16T18:49:17","slug":"see-gary-clark-jr-s-vision-of-rural-america-in-what-about-us-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/see-gary-clark-jr-s-vision-of-rural-america-in-what-about-us-video\/","title":{"rendered":"See Gary Clark Jr.\u2019s Vision of Rural America in \u2018What About Us\u2019 Video"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Screen-Shot-2019-02-16-at-9.52.52-AM.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Gary Clark Jr. has released a black-and-white music video for his latest single \u201cWhat About Us,\u201d\u00a0which features on the guitarist\u2019s forthcoming politically charged album\u00a0<em>This Land.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The video for the track\u00a0was directed by\u00a0Savanah Leaf and showcases a group of people living and spending time in a trailer park: a black father teaching his son to play the electric guitar, a senior mixed-race couple smoking and two gender-fluid millennials spending time in an inflatable pool.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent interview with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/gary-clark-jr-new-album-racism-donald-glover-789997\/\"><em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>, Clark said he considers \u201cThis Land\u201d \u201cthe most important song\u201d he\u2019s ever penned. \u201cIt\u2019s about being black in America, in the South,\u201d he told <em>RS<\/em>. Clark also revealed that the wanted to be known for more than just the blues, which is why his new record spans reggae to \u201cPrince-like epics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted every note and lyric to mean something,\u201d he told <em>RS<\/em>. \u201cWith the records I\u2019ve made before, there\u2019s so much emphasis on guitar: We\u2019ll just play a badass guitar solo, and no one cares about the lyrics. That\u2019s not what I got into it for. I like Quincy Jones. I like Stevie Wonder. I like Ray Charles. I like Cab Calloway\u2019s arrangements. I like bridges, pre-choruses.
