Ariana Grande<\/a> has the Number One, Two and Three songs \u2014\u00a0\u201c7 Rings,\u201d \u201cBreak Up With Your Girlfriend, I\u2019m Bored\u201d and \u201cThank U, Next\u201d \u2014 on the Hot 100 this week. No artist since the Beatles<\/a> in 1964 \u2014 with \u201cCan\u2019t Buy Me Love,\u201d \u201cTwist and Shout\u201d and \u201cDo You Want to Know a Secret?\u201d \u2014 laid claim to the three most popular songs in the country at once, Billboard<\/em><\/a> reports.<\/p>\n

Thank U, Next<\/em><\/a> continues to be a defining moment for the artist after a turbulent year. Grande\u2019s fifth studio album is her second number one record in six months and at 360,000 total copies sold, the best sales week of her career<\/a>. Before tying the Fab Four\u2019s record, Savan Kotecha \u2014 a frequent Ariana collaborator and co-writer of four Thank U, Next<\/em> tracks \u2014 presciently compared the singer to another Sixties rock icon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way that Jimi Hendrix was with a guitar, Ariana Grande is like that with vocals,\u201d Kotecha told Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>. \u201cWhen the producer or engineer is not understanding what she wants [from the vocal arrangement], she just goes, \u201cdo you mind if I sit and do it?\u201d She\u2019ll go into Pro Tools and fix it. She\u2019s a master of the craft. I\u2019ve been around some of the greatest singers of all time. I\u2019ve never seen anything like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The latest album was recorded following the tragic death of Grande\u2019s ex-boyfriend, the rapper Mac Miller. She joined collaborators Kotecha, Max Martin and\u00a0Victoria\u00a0Mon\u00e9t and ended up making Thank U, Next<\/em> in two weeks. It is also notable that nine of the album\u2019s 12 songs have two or more female writers \u2014 a first on a Grande project. As the collaborators explained<\/a> to Rolling Stone<\/em>:\u00a0\u201cIn My Head\u201d took just 12 hours from start to finish, according to Denisia Andrews and Brittany \u201cChi\u201d Coney. With \u201c7 Rings,\u201d \u201cas soon as we decided we were gonna use that melody [\u201cMy Favorite Things\u201d from\u00a0The Sound of Music<\/em>], words started to fall into place,\u201d says Njomza Vitia, a co-writer on both \u201cThank U, Next\u201d and \u201c7 Rings. \u201cIt all happened so fast.\u201d\u00a0And \u201cNASA\u201d was written that same day.<\/p>\n
