Groff\u2019s wife Kelly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/music\/2019\/02\/record-store-owner-early-dc-punk-producer-skip-groff-dies-at-70\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed<\/a> to WTOP that the owner of D.C.\u2019s Yesterday &amp; Today suffered a seizure Monday and died at a nearby hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Dischord Records\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ian-mackaye\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ian-mackaye\" data-tag=\"ian-mackaye\">Ian MacKaye<\/a> and Jeff Nelson, both members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/minor-threat\/\" id=\"auto-tag_minor-threat\" data-tag=\"minor-threat\">Minor Threat<\/a> and their predecessor the Teen Idles, penned a tribute to Groff, who produced Minor Threat\u2019s self-titled\u00a0EP as well as other hardcore acts that often frequented and worked at Yesterday &amp; Today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo say that Dischord Records wouldn\u2019t exist had it not been for Skip isn\u2019t really a stretch,\u201d the label wrote. \u201cIt was Skip that took the Teen Idles to Inner Ear Studio back in 1980 to record what would become Dischord #1 and it was Skip, having gone through the process with his own Limp Record label, that walked us through the steps of getting a record pressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MacKaye and Nelson continued, \u201cAnd it was Skip\u2019s record shop, Yesterday and Today, that sold our records and it was in Skip\u2019s trust in us and belief in the label that led him to lend us money to press records when we were completely broke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/music\/2017\/07\/yesterday-today-early-dc-punks-shopped-worked-at-record-store\/slide\/1\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">an article<\/a> commemorating the 40th anniversary of Yesterday &amp; Today, Groff told WTOP, \u201cWith 45s, it\u2019s the essence of songs being an A-side and a B-side, and putting all your money where your mouth is\u2026 My 45 shop was strictly 7-inch 45s \u2014 that\u2019s always been my passion and my love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Groff added of recording Teen Idles\u2019 <em>Minor Disturbance<\/em> EP in 1980, \u201cI thought we did a pretty good job, and it\u2019s certainly become a legendary record over a period of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> named Minor Threat\u2019s <em>Complete Discography<\/em>, featuring the Groff-produced EPs, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/40-greatest-punk-albums-of-all-time-75659\/minor-threat-complete-discography-1989-173900\/\">the 27th greatest punk album of all time<\/a>. \u201cSkip clearly sought and found joy in music and it was through the vernacular of music that he empowered so many to experience the same,\u201d Dischord Records wrote.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.1545064377682\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\" xml:lang=\"en\">A few thoughts from Ian and Jeff in rememberance of Skip Groff.
