Overseen by music supervisor Don Kirshner,\u00a0<em>More of the Monkees<\/em> was rush-released amid the chaos of Monkeemania, a mere three months after the release of their first record.<\/p>\n<p>Decked out in Sixties avocado green, the front cover featured a shot of the group from a JCPenney photoshoot. \u201cThe record was timed to come out specifically to go with a fashion thing where you could buy the clothes that were on the cover of the record,\u201d reissue producer Andrew Sandoval later <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PLPFzLRO6uc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Though the group was angered by the release, many of its 12 songs would become Monkees classics, such as \u201c(I\u2019m Not Your) Steppin\u2019 Stone\u201d and the Neil Diamond\u2013penned \u201cI\u2019m a Believer.\u201d \u201cI can\u2019t explain why it\u2019s proven to be so popular,\u201d Micky Dolenz told\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/the-monkees-our-life-in-15-songs-103726\/im-a-believer-1967-106739\/\">Rolling Stone<\/a><\/em>\u00a0of the latter. \u201cWith anything collaborative, at some point the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour Auntie Grizelda,\u201d the fifth track on the record, was the first Monkees song to feature bassist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/peter-tork\/\" id=\"auto-tag_peter-tork\" data-tag=\"peter-tork\">Peter Tork<\/a> on lead vocals. \u201cIt was a total comedy thing,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monkeeslivealmanac.com\/blog\/today-in-monkees-history-1966-the-recording-of-your-auntie-grizelda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">recalled<\/a> co-producer Jack Keller. \u201cHe did that all in one take \u2026 he made up the whole thing. I was in a total state of shock when I heard it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tork would regularly perform the whimsical song at Monkees shows. In the video above, he frolics around the stage while singing, \u201cI know she\u2019s having a fit\/She doesn\u2019t like me a bit\/No bird of grace ever lit on Auntie Grizelda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tork <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/peter-tork-monkees-dead-at-77-obituary-797269\/\">died today<\/a> at 77 from unknown causes. \u201cI can only pray his songs reach the heights that can lift us and that our childhood lives forever \u2014 that special sparkle that was the Monkees,\u201d Michael Nesmith said in a statement. \u201cI will miss him \u2014 a brother in arms.
