Former One Direction<\/a> singer Louis Tomlinson honored his late mother on his poignant new song, \u201cTwo of Us.\u201d Tomlinson\u2019s mother died in 2016, and \u201cTwo of Us\u201d finds the singer both grappling with grief and striving towards hope amidst a swell of strings, piano and booming drums. \u201cI know you\u2019ll be looking down,\u201d Tomlinson sings, \u201cSwear I\u2019m gonna make you proud\/I\u2019ll be living one life for the two of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement, Tomlinson discussed the personal importance of writing a song like \u201cTwo of Us\u201d and his hope that it might help listeners struggling with similar issues. \u201cI just feel like musically, I almost needed to get this song off my chest,\u201d Tomlinson said. \u201cPeople say writing is a part of therapy and in a way, I feel like I\u2019d been avoiding writing this song because I knew I only had one chance to get it right. I don\u2019t mean to be too soppy about it, but if \u2018Two of Us\u2019 can help just one other person who\u2019s going through the tough time that I went through, then that would make me really happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo of Us\u201d marks the first single from Tomlinson\u2019s forthcoming solo debut, though a release date and title have yet to be announced. Since One Direction split, Tomlinson has released just a handful of songs: In 2016, he teamed with Steve Aoki for \u201cJust Hold On,\u201d<\/a> while in 2017 he released three tracks, \u201cBack to You,\u201d featuring Bebe Rexha and Digital Farm Animals, \u201cMiss You\u201d and \u201cJust Like You.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n
