The guitarist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/dick-dale-surf-guitar-king-dead-obituary-809294\/\">who died on Sunday<\/a>, shakes his ponytail, he hollers and he grits his teeth as he commands the tune\u2019s breakneck tempo up until its bluesy final notes.<\/p>\n<p>The song is best known as kicking in as Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer rob a diner and Plummer holds up her gun and threatens, \u201cAny of you fucking pricks move, and I\u2019ll execute every-motherfucking-last one of you!\u201d As <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> previously reported, the song itself is a Mediterranean folk tune whose title translates to \u201cEgyptian Girl\u201d (or, as author Alan di Perna once noted, more accurately it means \u201cNon-Christian Girl.\u201d) Dale released it as a single in 1962, but it failed to make the charts at the time, instead reaching a dedicated cult of music fans (including the Beach Boys, who followed Dale\u2019s lead with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rRlx3Ux37AA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">surfy version of the song<\/a> on their 1963 LP, <em>Surfin\u2019 USA<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving \u2018Misirlou\u2019 as your opening credit, it\u2019s just so intense,\u201d <em>Pulp Fiction<\/em> filmmaker Quentin Tarantino said in 1994. \u201cIt just says you\u2019re watching an epic, you\u2019re watching a big, ol\u2019 movie. . . It just throws down a gauntlet that the movie now has to live up to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of what makes the song so incredible is the sheer brute force with which Dale plays \u2014 especially live, like in the <em>Jool<\/em> clip. \u201cI\u2019m not some great guitarist like the Satrianis and the Van Halens,\u201d Dale&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/lifestyle\/1993\/10\/15\/dick-dales-second-wave\/d1514b3e-ba0d-48d9-a1ac-76ec5161a2ba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">told the&nbsp;<em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;in 1993. \u201cI never went to school and learned music theory. When I play, I go, \u2018This sounds like a tiger; this sounds like a volcano; this sounds like the lip of the water coming over my head when I\u2019m surfing.\u2019 My bass player says, \u2018When I stand behind you, I don\u2019t just see your arms moving, I see your shoulders shuddering, your back straining.\u2019 That\u2019s because I put all my physical force into my playing.
