Elton John<\/a> declares A Tribe Called Quest<\/a> the \u201cseminal hip-hop band of all-time\u201d in a new interview with Q-Tip<\/a> on the singer\u2019s radio show, Rocket Hour<\/em>. The latest episode premieres Thursday, March 21st at 1:00 p.m. ET on Apple Music\u2019s Beats 1.<\/span><\/p>\n

John introduces Q-Tip, the Tribe emcee, as \u201camazing\u201d and \u201ca legend in music,\u201d noting his admiration for the innovative, jazz-influenced Nineties rap group. \u201cIf you don\u2019t know A Tribe Called Quest, you\u2019re stupid,\u201d he said. \u201cBut if you listen to [\u2018Electric Relaxation\u2019], you\u2019ll understand why I rave about them.\u201d The \u201cRocket Man\u201d singer also called that song, a highlight from 1993\u2019s Midnight Marauders<\/em>, \u201cone of [his] favorite tracks\u201d from that year,<\/span> describing the group as \u201claid back [but] funky.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCan I just say something? I really pinch myself when you say that something that I did is a favorite track,\u201d Q-Tip replied. \u201cI\u2019m just like still kind of like, \u2018Am I dreaming?\u2019 I feel like I\u2019m in a different universe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

John also discussed his cameo from the sixth and final Tribe record, 2016\u2019s We Got It From Here\u2026 Thank You 4 Your Service<\/em><\/a> \u2014 a vocal and piano spot on the track \u201cSolid Wall of Sound,\u201d which also includes the acoustic guitar and vocals of Jack White. \u201cI was so happy to play that,\u201d he gushed. \u201cThat\u2019s where we first met you came to London, and we did a track in the studio, and it was such a huge honor for me. I was so excited. I just absolutely love this. This is such a takedown of what\u2019s going on \u2026 That is such a great track. The album is a fantastic record. If you\u2019re gonna bow out with a record, you better do something like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you so much for being a part of our last record,\u201d Q-Tip replied. \u201cIt meant so much to me. And just how everything ended.\u201d John noted that he wants to play and sing on \u201cmore stuff\u201d with the rapper: \u201cI\u2019d love to do something with you,\u201d he said. \u201cI can\u2019t wait to hear some new stuff from you and what you\u2019re producing. You\u2019re brilliant. I love you. You are the best.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the mutual praise, the duo also chatted about John recording with John Lennon<\/a> in the 1970s and Q-Tip meeting Little Richard for the first time in 1988; the rapper also teased that\u2019s working on three upcoming solo LPs and a collaboration with Mary J. Blige.<\/span><\/p>\n
