He was 56. The news was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheBeat\/photos\/a.347061265389956\/2150954058333992\/?type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">confirmed in a statement<\/a> on the Beat\u2019s official Facebook page. The cause of death has not been disclosed. In January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Y-5bBGvExt0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">he revealed<\/a>&nbsp;that he had been diagnosed with brain tumors and lung cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe fought &amp; fought &amp; fought, Roger was a fighter,\u201d the statement reads. \u201cSadly Roger past away a few hours ago peacefully at his home surrounded by family. Roger\u2019s family would like to thank everyone for their constant support during this time. More to follow in the coming days. RIP Roger!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Born Roger Charlery in 1963 in Birmingham, England, Ranking Roger joined ska punk band the Beat as a teenager following a stint as a drummer in another band and became one of the Beat\u2019s lead vocalists and main toasters. He appeared on all three of the group\u2019s studio albums (1980\u2019s <em>I Just Can\u2019t Stop It<\/em>, 1981\u2019s <em>Wha\u2019ppen?<\/em> and 1982\u2019s <em>Special Beat Service<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SHWrmIzgB5A?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Following the band\u2019s breakup in 1983, he teamed with fellow lead vocalist\/bandmate Dave Wakeling to form General Public, and they released two albums, 1984\u2019s <em>All the Rage<\/em> and 1986\u2019s <em>Hand to Mouth<\/em> before the band\u2019s dissolution, although Wakeling and Roger reunited in the Nineties to release <em>Rub it Better<\/em> and also recorded a cover of the Staple Singers\u2019 \u201cI\u2019ll Take You There\u201d for the <em>Threesome<\/em> soundtrack under the General Public moniker.<\/p>\n<p>Roger released a number of solo projects as well as launched various incarnations of the Beat (most recently billed as the Beat featuring Ranking Roger; Dave Wakeling formed his version as English Beat starring Dave Wakeling).<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Roger released <em>Bounce<\/em>, the first new album by the Beat in 30 years.
