Adkins has been hired as the Chief Operating Officer of Summit School District.
Bill Linfield / Special to the Daily

Few people have had more to do with shaping and improving Summit County’s future over the past decade than Drew Adkins. Adkins, Summit High School’s principal since 2008, has roamed the halls and thrown high-fives to students for the past 21 years. Now he’ll move into a new role as Summit School District’s chief operating officer.

The position of chief operating officer is new and intended to advance the district’s “Vision 2020” by integrating district operations into the overall five-year strategic initiative. In his new role, Adkins would hold a critical leadership position in the district and oversee operational aspects of the district, including facilities and transportation.

“Drew brings with him vast experience and depth of knowledge in a variety of operational areas, from budget development to incident response,” said district superintendent Kerry Buhler in a press release. “He is highly qualified for this important role, and I am confident he will be a great addition to the district with his leadership style and personal knowledge of our community as a Summit County resident and parent.”

Adkins began his career at Summit School District as a paraprofessional at Summit Middle School, later moving on to teach and coach tennis, skiing and basketball at Summit High. He became assistant principal in 2005 before becoming principal in 2008.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my 21 years as a SHS Tiger,” Adkins said. “The opportunity to lead and support the good work in our district in a new role is very exciting, although leaving the Green Machine is indeed bittersweet.”

In the time Adkins has served as principal, graduation rates at Summit High have risen from percentages in teh 80s to 97%, with second-language students and students from marginalized populations seeing graduation rates rise from 40% to 92%. The school has also introduced a variety of new programming, especially in STEM and career and technical education with the introduction of programs for medical prep, ski and bike tech, welding, and the culinary arts, among others.

Summit High has received several state and national accolades for achievement and improvement under Adkins’ tenure. That includes the Governor’s Award for Distinguished Improvement in 2015, being ranked one of U.S. News and World Report’s best high scools in the country in 2016-17, and recognized by GreatSchools.org in 2017-18 for doing an outstanding job preparing graduating seniors for postsecondary success.

“That couldn’t happen without the whole learning community being involved in supporting kids, and administration and staff doing what’s best for kids and setting a high bar,” Adkins said. “We also really value our partnerships with our parents and the community. It’s just been great to see the Green Machine here that supports our youth for their futures and wherever they may take them.”

Adkins also assured students and the community that he’ll still be around town, supporting SHS and Summit students in everything they do and achieve.

“I’ll continue to bleed green in my new job, I’m not going anywhere, that’s for sure,” Adkins said. “I’m confident the leadership we have here and our fantastic instructional team will continue to support our youth in an awesome fashion. I feel lucky and blessed to have been a teacher, coach and an administrator at Summit High.”

via:: Summit Daily

Summit High School Principal Drew Adkins speaks during the graduation ceremony for the Summit High Class of 2018, May 2018 at the SHS gymnasium in Breckenridge.
